Imnz

Kieran Doe 3rd, Bryan Rhodes 4th.

apparently a strong headwind on the way back…

Wow, looking at Bjorn’s profile, he is only 24. A young IM contender.

The guy in 3rd is only 22. (Kieran Doe)

chris macdonald (the other “macca”, this one being an epic camper) seems to have done pretty well for himself, riding a 4:51:51

your logic is slightly flawed, because although the others might be a half hour down on bjorn coming off the bike, some swam slower than him

As a matter of fact, 5th and 6th are only 25. Lots of youngsters in the top 10.

I think we’re going to be seeing a major “changing of the guard” in the next few years. Most of the current “names” in IM have been around for awhile. IMO they’ve become too cautious and unwilling to take risks. I’d love to see one of these young upstarts blow the Kona field open and get the times lowered again.

Maybe pinch of salt time, but Welchy says Bjorn has a 9:16 minute leadon Norm, yes NINE minutes at approaching the 4 hour , and 11+ to the Cam at the 125k point. That Volvo engine is cranking the 56 ring with a whole shitload of watts. I’d like to see a printout of that wattage!

With IM New Zealand on today (2017), I was thinking about Bjorn’s race in 2004, when he was putting close to 10 minutes into Stadler in the trail end of the IMNZ bike course…or course, wtih Cam Brown and others in the field, it was an awesome race.

In any case, I promise I did not put put a Superdave Outlook reminder in my calendar to pull this thread up 13 years later. But it was fun watching that race over the internet in 2004!

It took me until Norman Stadler’s name came up to clue into it was the 2004 race.

I should send Bjorn a FB message and tell him to we’re talking about his 2004 race!!! Can someone get Cam Brown over too?

Well forget about getting Cam Brown on this this thread…the LEGEND is racing his 20th IM New Zealand today in Taupo!!! Rock on Cam!

Looks like Bozzone has a big lead at 145K in the bike. It’s a stacked field with Marino and Cam Brown in there!

Cam Brown was 14 min down on Terrenzo at 138K

I raced IMNZ that day 2004. I had a DNF as I was sick prior to the race but returned the next year to get a decent result.
I think people underestimate that race in terms of its difficulty. I always felt so exposed out there, and the high UV seemed to bear down, both in '04 and '05. I wouldn’t mind attempting it again one day, and I’m glad after all these years it is still in the same place on the same course.
