IMNZ Picks: 20 min to race time

Can anyone beat Jo Lawn and Cam Brown? What are you picks. Race starts in 19 min…

BRRRRRRRRR!!!

With about 70 minutes until race start, we’re experiencing another bout of wind here in Taupo.

Race officials will be determining the status of the swim over the next hour or so. The weather report is calling for winds of between 25 and 35 knots this morning, and waves of about a meter on the lake.

The temperature right now is 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit), and is expected to reach a high of 15 C (59 F).

still waiting. must be really really windy. although i’ve no clue what 25-35 knots is in kph

k

I’m assuming that there is not a live video/audio feed today?

Jeromy

web cam shows rolling white caps like the ocean! Cold and windy, not my kind of race weather

must be really really windy. although i’ve no clue what 25-35 knots is in kph

==========================================================

47-62 kph!!

did they confirm that the race was going to start?

although i’ve no clue what 25-35 knots is in kph

knots are about 1.15 mph, so 25 x 1.15 mph/knot x 1.605 km/mile = 46 km/h

Similarly, 35 knots = 64.6 km/h

I’m glad it is not me down there!

25knots is about 30 MPH. No swim !!!

Being in aviation I am aware of the difference between staute and nautical miles, knots to kph were asked for. But no swim is bad news for anyone doing their first IM, but better safe than sorry.

The swim has been cancelled

We have just learned that the conditions are bad enough here in Taupo this morning to force the cancellation of the swim.

The athletes have been instructed to wait for another announcement at 8:15, at which point they’ll learn what the rest of the day will bring.

The wind conditions have been getting worse as the day has progressed here in Taupo, which is why things are still up in the air.
00:00

roughly 25 knots is 28 mph is 46 kph
.

Correct.

Gets worse:

Race officials are meeting with the athletes right now. Here is the gist of the message they are giving right now:

  1. Weather conditions prevent a swim today.

  2. Contingency is for a bike-run event, but at this time the conditions will not allow for the 8AM start that was planned in this event.

  3. The weather reports are for a further deterioration over the next 1-2 hours.

  4. Officials are assessing the conditions for a bike-run event and will make a further announcement at 8:15AM here in the marquee.

We’ll have more after the 8:15 announcement.

I would be really pissed off if I had paid all that money to do this race and they cancelled the swim. If you have to, make the swim optional for those that want to get official times, and the rest can do a fun run/bike. They don’t cancel the bike and run portions when it gets too hot. The sport has finally become wussifyied, oh well, that what we get for appealing to the masses I guess. This would have never happened 20 years ago…

20 years ago the race organizers wouldn’t have to worry so much about potential lawsuits…

25-35 kts means that it is blowing the spray off the tops of the waves
in tthe gusts. It is very hard to see a swimmer in those conditions never mind recover them into a motorboat, even if there aren’t other swimmers around.

A good day for the windsurfers, but not much else…

I would think there would be an issue with lifeguards. A lot of them are out there on surfborads and having to try and stay in one place for those guys would likely cause many issues.

Guys - without actually being there I is really hard to get a good read on the conditions - I would hate for a repeat of the attempted swim in Utah!

Have the swim for those who want to do it. Take your own risks; take off the skirt.

If only 10 guys can safely do this swim, I’d say that’s all the more reason to have it. This sport is supposed to be about caitering to the highest common denominator rather than the lowest.
