I think we will call it a score draw. I didn’t beat the course, it didn’t beat me. Positives: I got to the start line. I kept going, I finished, I avoided the medical tent. Negatives: didn’t go as fast as I hoped: 14:44:09 964th place. Started off well, good controlled swim, 1:20, bang on target. First lap of the bike 3:10, going well, second lap 3:50 started to slow down, first lap of the run (all right, call it a run/walk) 3:10, second lap 3:00. I must have held something back. Once I knew it wasn’t going to be a good day on the run, I made sure I finished. I was 4kg lighter at the end, so on the edge of some serious dehydration. Injuries: one toenail, one patch of severe sunburn where the singlet didn’t meet the shorts.
Fantastic finsh photo, at the line with my two children, still smiling. I didn’t hear the words: “You are an Ironman”. But I am.
Hey Mark, good job! We probably rode near each other. I was 3:20 on the first lap and slowed down in the wind on the second. Run was tough, especially first lap while the sun was strong. But, the crowds all over the course were just awesome. I love this race.
I was looking for you but couldn’t see you: story of my Ironman week: Hope we catch up at dinner. Hope you are not sitting in the same internet cafe: now that would be embarassing.
No, didn’t see her: qualifiying for Kona was the last thing on my mind. After my performance yesterday I think that one is an impossible dream unless i can keep on going till I am 70. But, way to go, Cathy!
