I just signed up for Run station #11, cuz that was the only thing on race day that looked available on the course in NYC. They are already up to 700 volunteers. Don’t know yet if I’ll do it in 2013, but I’ll see how well this one goes, and make the decision then.
Thinking of volunteering as well… Quick question (couldnt find the answer on the website). As with most of the volunteering for ironman events, do the NYC volunteers get preference in signing up for next year?
that’s a good question. what have the other “championships” been like? is it something you can volunteer for to get a spot, or is it something you have to qualify for like Kona. otherwise, it’s just a bigger purse for sponsored athletes.
I went to the volunteer site to register and noticed there’s no Sunday (day after event) onsite registration volunteer slots listed.
I noticed that too. However, when I signed up to volunteer, there was a drop-down box inquiring as to why I would want to volunteer and one of them was something to the effect of being able to register for next year.
I don’t see anything on the site about ANY registration for 2013. I’d like to think it’s just an oversight, but maybe 2013 isn’t locked down yet?

I had the opportunity to speak with John in-person within the last week- they are still deciding what they are going to do for 2013 registration.
As in they might not have it again next year, or they’re just not sure about how they want to handle the registration process? Thanks for the info!

As in they’re just not sure how they want to handle the registration process. They are absolutely planning on it continuing year after year- they already have great plans for the race this year and plan on continuing to improve it and make THE Ironman to do at least once.
Glad to hear there’s such a motivated squad behind the event. I’m excited to volunteer regardless of the registration for next year. Thanks again for the info.
I volunteered for run finisher area thought I would 2-7 to see the pros etc and then also for the 7-12.30 to see everyone else too. I want to see the swim to bike too but not sure if that would be possible with the distance between transition and the finishing area.
No thanks, I’d rather donate my time to a worthy cause.
The way I see it is you get out what you given in. I want someone who’s excited to volunteer for my event, being supportive and energetic. If I can do that for others, and get that in return when its my time…win-win.

Puhleeezzz!
Great marketing (“IMNYC” when 90% is in NJ???) but it will always be for newbies and “tourists”. Your’re close though, it’s likely no one will do it MORE THAN once.
or the one for locals that don’t want to travel for a race.
agreed but I believe many of those locals are newbies (both first time IM and actual newbies to the sport). I’m local (w/ ZERO desire to do it) and have heard of at least 1/2 dozen people doing it as their first triathlon.
Those WTC owners are no dummies and the saw the market. But sadly I predict ugliness and carnage. I just hope nobody gets seriously hurt or worse.
i just hope they don’t have noodles in the hudson
.
I’m thinking of volunteering for IM NYC as a kayaker. Does anyone have any experience doing this for an IM race? Do I need to be a certified lifeguard?
i think at lake placid they wanted you to be a lifeguard, but at the same time, i don’t remember them checking. also, realize you are working against a current
seriously? you want people to travel to your event, pay for airfare or gas, hotel, food etc, donate their time and then not even be courteous enough to allow volunteers to register at the front of the line?
