With everyone who has just returned from Lake Placid and all of those who have just signed up for 2006, what were the wheels of choice there? Were rear discs a good choice?
I used a set of 404’s and went 5:31 on the bike - couldn’t have gone much faster, i reckon.
I watched the race, and I saw every type of wheel in every part of the course. Discs in 5-hours, and discs in 7-hours. Zipp 606’s in 5:30 and Zipp 606’s in 8:30.
i used a 909 set up and would again. Even tiny heather fuhr used a zipp disc and 808 on the front and had (one of if not) her fastest bike split for that course…
I used a front Zipp 440 and a rear HED trispoke. Worked fine.

when you say you watched the race, where did you watch it? the only thing I watched was the finish line tape, whenever they turned that on…
I set up on the last hill before the special needs stop. The riders came up the hill slowly so I was able to get a good look at bikes, wheels, riding style, etc. I was able to see first hand how much better than me the fast people ride.
she said on triathlete magazine’s websight that she would only use that set-up in perfect wearther conditions, however.
if your legs are strong enough for a disc, go for it. mine felt great on the first lap but on the second lap, i wished i had gone with a HED.3 rear (ran one of those on front). lots of people had those front and rear (it was the day after lance did so on the time trial – coincidence?). anyhow, first lap was about 2:55 and second was about 3:15 so i probably would have been better off with a lighter set…my dilemma was that the HED.3s are not much lighter than the disc. if i had 404s or something similar, i would have gone with those – but it ALL depends on you and how strong you are.
