Buddy and I are headed up to IMLP this weekend for some training/course reconnaissance. Any ideas for good sites to do some carside camping nearby Lake Placid?
Any advice appreciated.
If there are other ST’ers headed up for training rides let me know that as well and maybe we can form a group ride.
If you’re up for some course riding with my Brazilian friend, who incidentally just qualified for Kona at the Eagleman tri, and I, let me know and we can coordinate a group ride or something. Its our first trip up to LP for training, but we’ve been riding lots of hills down here in MD and VA.
Hey. Three of us are headed up to LP this weekend (actually from the maryland area). Leaving thursday midday and coming back saturday evening. We will be riding in the AM on Fri and Sat - probably leave transition between 7 and 8. What is your plan?
If you want a really beautiful place to camp (complete with cold mountain lakes and swimming holes) check out the ADK Loj at heart lake. There is a really nice rustic lodge there, as well as camping.
It is at the trailhead of the hikes to Mt Marcy and Algonquin - I have camped there many times while backpacking. It is only 5 miles from lake placid.
So far weather looks pretty crappy until Sunday - but our plan is to ride the full course Fri departing at 8AM and probably swim in the afternoon (~5pm). Saturday will be either a run of the course (13.1m) or shorter bike at 7AM then head home in the afternoon.
Wilmington Notch Campground is pretty nice. It’s about a third of the way along the climb from Wilmington back into LP, so you can stand at the fence of the campground, look down at the road, and do some visualization work. It’s a small, rustic campground, which to me means no noisy kids or yahoos playing loud music at all hours.
Have fun:-) I was just there 2 weeks ago, it was great. the water felt good, it was nice and sunny. I think I’ll be getting there on july 22 next… Not sure what my coch has planned but I think something like riding the course backwards on race day! For sure we will have to have a slowtwitch meeting:-)
For all of you driving up to LP this weekend, make sure to check the road conditions north of Albany. We’ve been having a ton of rain in certain areas and there have been some road closures/detours (including on 87, I think) due to to mudslides. (None on the course!)
Doesn’t sound like we will overlap much. Plan to drive up Sat early am and maybe squeeze in a brick in the late afternoon. Swim/Full Course ride on Sun. Long Run 18 mi on Monday am.
