Hey folks, the carbo load is at 5:30 on Friday. I’m staying at the Courtyard Marriott which is on the way there. If anyone wants to swing by at 4:45 we can talk smack and make our way over at around 5 pm. Since I have done this race 7 times, I can certainly share a thousand miles worth of “what not to do on race day” mistakes, so that you don’t have to live through the same yourself. Please post on this thread it you plan to synch up.
Linehardt…from the Courtyard Marriot to the Horseshow grounds I’d estimate the walk at ~ 1K (not sure if people want to walk 2K 2 days before the Ironman…it might totally blow their taper ). Not sure how much parking is at the Marriott…I’d imagine that it would be somewhat full. Obviously there is a ton of parking at the Horseshow grounds, but there is usually a long long traffic lineup to get out of there.
I’ll be in Wilmington, so I gotta figure out the parking situation, but that might be nice. I can use all the pointers I can get! I’ll have to let you know for sure…
~1.5 mile from Crowne Plaza to Marriott and another 1K further to the Horse Grounds.
OK, let’s start with a few “What not to do”
No equipment changes race week No standing around in the expo for 7 hours a day No arguing about anything with family members (Yes we get cranky during taper and pre race stress)…you want max good Karma from the people around you (…note to self…be good) No sprinting out of T1 to the top of Keene No big ring out of the saddle climbing during second half of loop 1 No “making up time” on bike loop 1 after a lame swim No “making up time” by sprinting after fixing a flat No “making up time” after getting any form of a penalty No “chasing” arbitrary Heart Rate or Wattage number if you feel like crap…if you feel like crap slow down and your body will be thankful later No picking up your pace when your training buddy passes you until the last 10 miles of the run. If he is passing you he is likely feeling better than you…you’ll pass him when he has a down period and we all have em.
OK, I am sure we’ll discuss more but this will get the discussion rolling into the gory details of each time I have made any of the above mistakes…and paid the price 5-9 hours later!
This looks like the solution as the trolley stops at the BW Golden Arrow(across from the Northwoods) and at the Horse Show Grounds. Now I just have to determine whether the Econo Lodge or the Spruce Lodge is closer to the Courtyard.
