I’ve worn out the search feature and decided to just ask for some input for IMLP 2008.
I’ll be going with my wife and 3 girls, ages 8-13. We’d like to be walking distance to main street and the race, on or near the water, not in a hotel (i.e. in a condo or suite with a kitchenette and at least 2 bedrooms). Would pay up to $300 per night comfortably; more is possible. I know I need to get this done ASAP. Anyone got the spot for us?
We had a superb house on beech hill circle(122) - basically right at the run turn around on mirror lake. Might be a little large for the one family unless you’re brining in laws/parent setc in which case it would be perfect.
We ate at the Swiss Acres Inn and it was very nice. It seemed like the place catered to the triathlete but it is not within walking distance of the IM show. Of course it’s right across the street from some fun stuff the kids may enjoy.
We stayed at Pine Hill Condos 3 of the 4 years I have done Placid. With three kids it worked out very well. In all cases we used Lake Placid Accommodations. This year we rented a private home near the Ice Skating rink but that was a bit expensive.
Having been up there twice prior to the race and during, I have to say the best place I stayed was at the surprising Wilderness Inn! We were scared at first, since its a “trailer home” and in Wilmington, but I didn’t have a lot of money and couldn’t afford to stay in town. Plus, there were only three of us, and we wanted a kitchen since it was too expensive and too worrisome to eat out before the race. Our little place felt like a cabin in the woods with all the comforts of a hotel room. It was clean, had 2 bedrooms, a bath, and a kitchen. Plenty of room, plenty of beds. It was so nice and calming to be away from the environment. the help couldn’t have been nicer, supplying us with extra cooking materials and bike towels.
It is FAR from luxuorious, but it was perfect for those looking for cheap comfortable accommodations!
I stayed at the Pine Hill condos this year and highly recommend it. There were eight of us in our group (four who were racing plus one training for IM MOO) and we had plenty of room for all of our bikes/gear. We had a nice, clean comfortable unit that also had a good-sized kitchen and a gas grill on the back deck. It’s a short walk to town but also far enough away that it was nice and quiet, plus is close enough that any friends/family staying with you who aren’t racing can have a good spot to watch the bike and run near the Station pub and also be close enough to go back to the condo for anything during the day.
