So how is everyone’s training going now that we’re in crunch time?
I did an 80 mile bike/five mile run Sunday and felt pretty decent. Came across three other riders on tri bikes and found out they were all doing IMLOU as well. Took Monday off and ran 8 Tuesday. Holy cow that first mile was slow, legs felt like iron tree trunks. But the longer I ran the better they felt. This weekend is shorter bike on Saturday (40 miles) and long run Sunday (13-15 miles). I throw in mile swims through the week but will up that closer to taper time. To be honest, I’m starting to feel a little burnout. I’ll be glad when taper time comes around.
Sounds good…I did a 180k ride/15k run brick on Sunday. Went well, no problems, major ones anyway. Still trying to get comfortable in the saddle for that long. For the past few weeks I’ve been doing a 4k swim on Fri or Sat followed by a 180k ride and then a run, building up from 5k to 15k this last weekend. IMLou will be my first and it scares the hell out of me. Just hope I’m doing enough! Keep up the good work, taper starts soon! Cheers
For the last couple of weeks I have been feeling both overtrained and undertrained at the same time. Yes I know paradox. And I have gained some weight which is a bit painful. But on Sunday I did 70 bike miles then 14 miles run and felt awesome… so that was good. Then yesterday I went to the KY river and did 2.4 miles then ran 8ish miles… and that felt great though slow.
This weekend I am going to go ride the course and then run…
So I guess the bottom line is that things are starting to come together pretty well.
The only thing that is worrying me a bit is that is my first IM… well actually this will be my first triathlon. So there is defiantly uncertainty.

**This is my fourth Ironman and there is uncertainty there as well so don’t sweat it too much. Lots of things can affect your race. Be flexible in your goals and race. And good luck! Sounds like you’ve done some killer training so you should be fine. **
Training is going rather well actually…nailed my long brick (101x10) this past weekend…got a nice 3 hr. run on Sat with a 60 mile bike on Sun then one more long workout planned for the following weekend of 120+ miles on the bike…then into TAPER!
Starting to get that “itchy”/want to go type feeling after an off day so my adaptation looks to be on schedule…of course the weather here has been nice without the usual heat of summer so if Aug 26 turns really hot things could change…
Best of Luck to all and be safe out there when training…
So far, so good. I think(?). This is my 3rd IM, and training for each one has been different. My long run so far has been 20 miles. This weekend will be my “Terrible Triple” workout. It might sound a little unconventional, but I’ve attempted it each IM year and it’s a big confidence booster and a big help in figuring out nutrition. It goes like this:
20 mi Bike
6 mi Run
20 mi Bike
6 mi Run
20 mi Bike
6 mi Run
I have yet to actually finish 6 miles in the last segment. Usually it’s closer to 4 miles. I’m looking forward to Louisville. It HAS to be better weather than Wisconsin last year. That was the worst. I’d rather it be 99 degrees with 99% humidity than 50 and freezing rain! Bring on the heat!
My coach has just started my taper. I have followed his plan exactly, and he has coached a number of IM finishers. I keep telling myself I am ready. I have felt great the last couple of weeks on my long rides and runs. Now I just have to deal with the mental part of the race. This is my first full IM. I am trying to remember how I felt a few years ago in the few weeks before my first half to help get over the jitters. Good luck to all.
Sucks. Out of the water much of June with a neck strain, and now haven’t run much in July because of an ankle sprain. I am ready to throw my bike in a ditch.

What kind of bike? And where is this ditch? Hey, just look at is as an early taper. You may just surprise yourself out there. I’m seeing what others are doing and it kinda scares me because I havn’t been doing those kind of distances/bricks. Hmmm, I may have to rethink my next few weekends.
A Kestrel Talon with alot of miles on it! I am just frustrated because I really liked where my run fitness was before this. Now it is hard for me to get motivated to get out of bed in the mornings, and I am missing workouts. I just want it to be over. Doing 120 on the course this Sat, and trying to run “long” on the trails Sun, then next weekend will try my 45/8/45/8 double brick, then call it a day.
About 50 miles of them in Seneca and Cherokee Parks, which are connected. Also, Bernheim Forest, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and Otter Creek, where Dean Kanzares did his marathon in KY for the 50 in 50 days. Alot of options. The trails at Jeff Mem are pretty difficult, but fun. There is a race there every Feb, Louisville Luvin’ the Hills, a 15 and 30 mile run. I did it for the first time this winter, the 15 miler, and was shocked at how long it took me. Fun though. I did the Birmingham Mercedes Mini Marathon as a training run (hilly course) in 1:41, and 2 weeks later it took me 2:56 to do the Luvin’ the Hills 15 miler. Even the leaders were walking some of the hills, at some points on all 4’s.
I like the idea of your double brick. I may have to give it a shot this sunday. On a side note: what are some cool things for the family to do on Saturday in Louisville? I have the wife and two boys, ages 9 and 6 and the retired in-laws. Depending on what they do, I may join them or I may just put my feet up in the hotel room.
There is a Louisville Bats home game (AAA), ballpark is a mini-Camden Yards and right downtown (about 2 blocks from transition actually), tickets are really cheap and there is a little playground with small rides for kids there. State Fair is going on at that time, so they could judge a pig contest. Actually, the World Championship Horse Show goes on during the Fair, don’t know if your kids love horses.
There is a newly born baby elephant at the Zoo, also Gorilla Forest and the polar bears are a big hit (http://www.louisvillezoo.org/).
Unfortunately, Churchill Downs is closed until the fall meet.
Coming along pretty good but am also feeling a bit burnt out and fatigued. The bike being my weakness, I’ve put in 100+ miler (a few of them 115) the last 5 out of 6 saturdays My last long run will be 22 miler this tuesday. I have’nt done many bricks but plan a short one for today and a bit longer one saturday. Swim weeks have been up to 8000 meters. I also am looking forward to taper time.
