OK - I just HAD to be first with this! I’ll keep it brief.
The swim start was pretty cool actually! Times are about the same as other IM for most swimmers with the current helping some on the way in, but the lack of wetsuit hurting - so a wash. I was much slower than I anticipated though at 1:13 (shooting for 1:05-7) as a wetsuit really helps me. Nice to be wetsuit free though! Water tasted and felt fine to me.
VERY long transition area runs! Man!
Bike was beautiful - a really nice course with near perfect roads like Lake Placid. I was about right on there with the heat at 5:29. Was hoping for just a little faster.
Run was brutal - saw even some of the pros walking. I doubt anyone, pros or otherwise go under 3 hours with the heat. Easy course - but mother nature really hurt me here. I was planning a 3:30 and ran a 3:55. Ouch! Actually, I ran pretty well, but you really had to take you time through the rest stops to get some salt/fluids in or you were doomed. Never saw so many fit looking triathletes walking!
Couple local Ohio boys crushed the M35-39 AG with Ed Walker going 9:41 and Jeff Coudron at 10:03. Another Wheelie Fun young gun I don’t know in 9:48. Fellow Planet X teamate Mike Donia pulls a studly race at 9:52 after crashing at Vineman - he still had wounds on his legs that he showed me for Pete’s sake! Scott Myers at 9:52? and his wife in at 10:55? What a pair! Cheryl Chaney in 11:01 in F 45-59. Good Cincy/southern OH representation.
All in all, a very nice race. Top notch as expected.
Hey Rob, awesome race. Thanks for the race report. Looks like the swim times for many were very “fair”. Any race where you can finish and have a race report up that nite and not spend it in the med tent is a good race!
Wow! Fantastic times! I’m really impressed, as that my 40 minute run today was all I could handle. Much impressed with those that finished, let alone with great times.
I was thinking about this for '09…how does the bike compare to IMLP hill-wise?
Easier than LP “hill wise”, but LP has near perfect weather which hurts a lot more. I’d say the course is more similar to IM Moo and proper pacing with all 3 of the IM races is key. I finally negative split the bike well, on purpose.
Swim could be brutally hard if they had the original course - swimming 1.2 miles up current without a wetsuit (no way this will ever be wetsuit legal, like Kona) would be murder on slower swimmers!
Great job Roofer! I did IMW 2005 in what Graham Fraser said were the toughest conditions he had ever seen. I’ve always been kind of proud of that, but it sounds like this race might be competing for the Carnageman title. Crazy!
Thanks for the info! I can’t imagine having done the swim sans-wetsuit. Was it strictly prohibited? Or did some people actually try to wear one and forgo awards?
Honestly, with the weather, I’m astounded. I was freaking hot when it was 85 at IMLP. Congrats.
Nice job Rod!!! It was a hot one out there for sure! I’m showered and headed down to the finish line for a pint and to cheer on the people that made a day out of it. I saw a lot of them struggling on the run too.
Yup - struggling was an understatement! Got a nice post race massage, nap, shower and ate with the family. They are heading to the pool and I’m heading down to cheer in the late finishers as well.
