If its the old building then its a dump, but if its the new building then go for it, that place is nice. I stayed at the Holiday Inn down the street which was nice and reasonable and they had plenty of rooms at the last minute.
P.S. I think I saw your girlfriend out there, shes a hottie.
Building east is almost uninhabitable from what I’ve heard and seen in passing.
The west building is decent I stayed there for 4 days at Gulf Coast this year. I was on the top (4th) floor so it wasn’t too noisy but I think anything lower would have been pretty loud with all of the race related activities.
From what I can tell any reference to “family” in the description implies an old set of iron bunk beds squeezed into the room at some point.
You may want to consider the new tower east of the old buildings, I’ve been here for the week this year for IMFL (and coming back next year!) and can’t say enough good things about it. The finish line is directly in front of the lobby. I’ve got several pictures if you’re interested.
Monk,
I’ve done it 3 times, and would stay at one of the other condos if I were you. It’s still just a very short walk to the race headquarters, yet away from the madness. At least you can pick when you want the insanity the event brings. The beautiful beach can be accessed from a lot of places.
I stayed at a condo 3 blocks away, not on the beach, and loved it! A very short walk, but a full kitchen, washing machines, separate bedroom, living room, dining room area…beautiful. With kids, maybe try the beachfront, but I think the host hotel is a dump.
How bout the Summitt or the Edgewater…I was very impressed with the Edgewater even though it was 1 mile away from the venue… anyone have thoughts on these two? …and oh yea…Heavy D.'s hotel had free internet in the lobby so you can check slowtwitch out…
Summit is ok - aging but still perfectly functional and from my eyes the price was pretty great… they also have wireless internet in the lobby (which is where I’m sitting)
The summit was a dump. We were supposed to stay at the sunbird but they moved us because of vicitims of Katrina. The summit is really old and smells like mothballs. If it was just me I would have stuck it out but I was travelling with wife, kid and in-laws ( mother in law puked from the smell, so its not all bad!)so we moved to the holiday inn sun spree which was fantastic. Only 1.5 miles from the start and super clean. Great pool too
I’m sitting right next to Zinc in the lobby of the Summit as i type this. My room was ok… I guess that there are 2 ways u can go when u stay here at the Summit. They rent some rooms out at the front office and also some are rented out by the condo owners. I rented mine thru the condo owner. Checkout www.vrbo.com for a list of people renting their condos out. U can see some pics of the rooms on the www.vrbo.com website.
You might consider that the race noise will be going to 12:00 AM in front of the hotel. In fact, this year they moved the finish line to the driveway at the entrance to the hotel; with an uphill finish at IMFL!
Didn’t they remodel the boardwalk?? I thought I remembered it getting a facelift last year at IM or maybe it was at gulf coast this year. I never stayed there but I do remember some construction. We called yesterday after I got in and they said east wing(allows pets) was $139/night with a 5night min. I don’t want to drop that much if it’s nasty.
The east wing (overlooking transition) was definitely not remodeled as of May 2005. In fact, I’d swear the decor was original. I’m not sure it qualifies as nasty, but there were no fewer than 4 previously opened and used bars of soap on the window ledge in the shower.
There’s a certain amount of short term remodeling, but long term, they’re going to tear down the entire complex and replace it with condos. And since the whole complex currently has an expiration date, there’s probably a certain amount of deferred maitenance going on.
