Bummer. She was my pick. Thats gonna change up your training plans a bit.
Yeah, and was she told to ride the other bike? And if so, by whom!?
What’s I find crappy is how WTC sweeps the rule enforcement under the rug: Live Feed:
Cooper-Scott is now running in second and we are awaiting her arrival at 19 miles and we will get you that split when it comes in. 20:00 has elapsed since Kessler has gone by our spotter at that location.
09:09
With a mile to go we have Matthew Russel in the last podium position with a size able gap. @mattlieto

USA’s Tim O’Donnell has claimed second here at Coeur d’Alene in a time of 8:41:36
08:54
Kessler has just gone through mile 22 and looking good.
08:52
Zyemtsev is your 2012 Ironman Coeur d’Alene champion. This is the Ukrainian’s third title here in Idaho in a time of 8:32:29.
08:44
At mile 19, Kessler is enjoying a 6:50 lead over Wurtele.

When did Cooper Scott make the pass?
Then at the finish line interviewing Kessler, she says ~ “Proud of Heather and she’s going to get 2nd today.” and then the announcer says something like “Not sure how it will end up.” I think they know, but they don’t want to give the crowd and the followers the downer news.
Let’s not miss the small detail of how badass she is for snapping her crank arm in two.
I have snapped cranks in the past. It is usually a manufacturing issue.
What would have been badass is if she finished the last 12 miles pedaling one crank
Yeah, and was she told to ride the other bike? And if so, by whom!?
I assumed the other pro gal, apologies forgot her name, saw her walking it in and offered her bike. What REALLY sucks is that such a nice gesture resulted in one pro being DQ’ed and another not finishing the race, assuming she was in ok shape and planning on finishing. Maybe the other pro was done and planning on dropping when she saw Heather. It will be interesting to hear the story.

So you’re saying this whole sorry mess could of been avoided if she’d of spent some time training on PowerCranks?

Cranks? Plural? You’ve snapped more than one crank?
Agreed. That would have been badass.
Curious, now Trevor is quoting the outside assistance rule, about which I was incorrect, as being the reason for her DQ on FB.
Here’s current rule: “Each athlete must be individually responsible for repair and maintenance of their own bike. Assistance by anyone other than race personnel will be grounds for immediate disqualification. Each athlete should be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction.” Sucks for Heather
Welchy got DQ’ed in IMJapan for accepting a wheel from Mrs Welchy when she came across him stuck out on the course…Or so the story goes.

Well, that makes sense.

She was racing as well… or maybe it was the other way round…I’m too old…![]()

I am older, I’d forgotten about that story!

There are some very rare occaisions when having me around is quite usefull…My quota for the quarter is done.
That’s not outside assistance … Kind of like Chrissie getting a CO2 cartridge from a fellow competitor and ended up winning the Kona a few years back. No?
That’s not true. Bec Keat “accidentally” dropped a co2 at Chrissie’s feet, and Chrissie just happened to “find” a co2 on the road. The only rule infraction in that case was that Bec technically dropped rubbish which has a time penalty, but the TO’s didn’t impose one.
bull. shit. Amazing how rules aren’t consistent, even at the pro ranks…granted they seem to be following the arbitrary attitude of the UCI

The Chrissie thing is total bullshit. Should have been a DQ. If you are going to DQ Heather then Chrissie should have been DQ’d. Different rules for different people I guess.
Racers are not considered outside assistance.
My understanding was the violation was a forward progress away from equipment, meaning that Heather was making progress away from her bike. If it was a wheel issue and Sym had given Heather one of her wheels and Heather finished on her bike with a different wheel that would not have been outside assistance (racers are part of the race) and would not have been a progress violation.
I have also seen in the USAT rules where this could have been a variable time penalty.
The rule that I heard as being the DQ:
5.2 Forward Progress. Participants shall not make any forward progress unaccompanied by their bicycle. If a bicycle is rendered inoperable, a participant may proceed on the cycling course, running or walking, while pushing or carrying the bicycle, so long as the bicycle is pushed or carried in a manner not to obstruct or impede the progress of other participants. Any violation of this section shall result in disqualification.
Regardless, I would hope that the USAT will clarify the matter to exactly what was the penalty as well as detail a list of scenarios that would have been possible and what the outcomes would have been
I think they made that rule or really decided to enforce it after the “chrissie incident.”
.
SO if she had strapped her bike to her back then and rode the tiny bike she would have been ok?
Then what do we call the when a athlete accepts a flag of their country or a cowboy has befor the finishing shoot?
