What’s the consensus for IMC on rear and front wheel choices? With the hills is it worth going with just and deep rim like 404s instead of a rear disc to save weight?
Opinions…
Thx.

weight is the last thing you should be worrie about on ironman canada course and pretty much any course in north america. go with a disc and as deep as possible at the front…
You’ll get a lot of different answers here.
I’ve done 808 front and rear the last 2 years which worked well … frankly I would almost use a rear disc if I wanted as the climbs are not that severe and there is a lot of flat. The only downside is that it can get windy … especially from the top of yellow lake back to Penticton.
A disc will slow you down there if its blowing and maybe get a little dicey if you’re small.
Dave
remember, a disc with a 808 is easier to controle than a 808 set, the disc at the back stabilize the front end of the bike… i have the 808 set also and 808set is harder to ride than a 808 and disc… and a disc is at his best and the fastest when it s very windy… so if it s stormy on the course next sunday, people with a disc will get a far bigger advantage than if it s only a calm day!
so to correct your sentence… if it s really windy, the disc will not slow him down, it s the opposite, he will get a even bigger advantage over the others…
I will be using all three ![]()
.
I’m going with my trusty Shimano R-550’s since those are the only wheels I have! Don’t blow by me too quickly (that’s assuming I can outswim you!).

Exactly what jonnyo said… except I think a deep front end (eg BW100) can be potentially dangerous for someone who’s light (<150lbs) and doesn’t have a high level of confidence descending at high speeds coming down from YL. It’s quite common to have some amount of wind blowing, possibly a lot of wind, during that time of day on that part of the course.
Thanks, Chris
