Let’s hear it! I’m doing my peak run and ride NEXT WEEK. Can’t wait to get it overwith!
next week??? who is coaching you? that is a interesting startegy to say the least…
I don’t need no stinking coach! Ha, ha. I did the same for IMFL/70.3 Championships last year. 100-mile ride and 20-mile run just a bit over 2 weeks out. BTW, my long run will be on August 9th, and my long bike will be on August 11th. I seem to respond well with about a 2-week taper. Then again, I’m an MOP AG’er and you’re a pro!
Indeed, wow on the “peak” ride and run two weeks out? Yikes!
Not that anyone’s trying to scare you or anything, but----I guess for perspective, what are the distances of those peak workouts?
Run- 20 miles
Bike- 100 miles
.
no problem, i dont want to change anything to your program, it s best to trust what you think at this time. You know yourself better. Hope to meet you when you are here,… and we can talk training… but only AFTER the race!!!
good luck in the final weeks
my peak run was today… my legs are done…
my training is coming along great and I am super excited about this year. Cycling improved so much and I can’t wait!!
Hope everyone is doing great. And hopefully I’ll meet some of you up there!
Hey! Good luck with the benchmark ride and run! I’m doing my longest run and bike this week, so I’m just right behind ya! Really didn’t think I was going to race IMC, my season was suppose to end a month ago at Great White North 1/2IM, BUT I qualified and here I am! Took a week to recover from race, started a different approach…as in LONG bike rides and runs once a week on top of my normal training regimen, and so far so good! Current longest ride is 155km and run 29km. This week will end with a mountain running race (Death Race in Grande Cache, AB) of 34km and a long 6.5hr ride (which should put me just about at 180km), they WILL be done seperately with 2 days of recovery in between. Hopefully this’ll prep me for my first IM!!
See ya all at IMC and take care of your beat-up bodies!!
My longest ride and run are already behind me and finishing off my last week of hard training this week. Getting SO excited for my first IM!
I plan to do the whole Death Race next year - and this year I was a bit scared to go out and do a relay this close to IMC - everyone here is getting just a lit-tle scary. I did a half-marathon a few days ago which will be my last long run with any degree of hardness; I did a 136 km hilly ride a few days before that and I had a 3km open water swim tonight. After this the workouts will be either short and sharp or long and fairly easy - maybe do a 3 or 4 hour ride on Monday. I do, however, plan to do a bit of strength work for the arms and lats over the next ten days or so, and increase my swim frequency in that time. There will be the swim and bike portions of an Oly as part of a relay, the day before I start driving a lot, and a week before we hear that cannon go off - but I’m a mid pack AGer looking at 12-13 hours out there. Interesting thread.
.
Peak run tomorrow morning. Peak ride on Saturday. Can’t wait for the taper to get some rest. Yesterday I forgot just how fast the water can come out of the pump at Bears and managed to give myself an impromptu shower!
Super psyched up for the race. I was supposed to do IMC last year but was hit by a truck while riding on July 8th and got a fractured pelvis out of the deal. Went up to Penticton anyway to support a friend doing the race and once I saw the place knew I had to do it this year. Training has really gone about as good as it could - feel tired but mentally ready. Last long run was Tuesday which went surprisingly well, did a couple 4K+ swims this week and last 100+ mile ride is Friday. Plan on riding as much IM pace + hills as I can Friday through Sunday then its taper time, though I plan to keep the swim volume high for at least one more week.
Did my last long run yesterday and my legs are feeling really sore today. Last long ride is on Saturday and after that its taper time. Fly to Canada 17th Aug and hope a week is enough time to acclimatise to temps that are double what I have been training in!
Hey John,
I’m also expecting to finish somewhere in the 12 1/2 hour range. Finished IMFL last year in 12 flat, but this course has hills, so I’ll add 1/2 hour to my bike time. We’ll see. Either way, hope we can have a small ST meeting at some stage.
I missed meeting the infamous Jonnyo last year in Clearwater, so hopefully he’d be able to meet up too. I’m going to both the banquets, so maybe at one of those…
Wow! I fly in on Thursday, 23rd. Too expensive to stay longer for me.
Hello to all STers going to IMC. I hope we have a get together there.
I’m doing IMC for the third year in a row. My long rides peaked on July 28th with a seven hour ride covering 205 km and my long runs peaked on July 25th at 2.5 hours covering just under 18 miles. Both workouts felt great! Real confidence boosters. The ride especially was the best long training ride I have ever done in terms of time, distance, average speed and a measured effort level.
Since this coming weekend is a long weekend, I’ll ride long on Saturday (probably 6 hours) and then do a longish brick on Monday after an easy Sunday and then the taper really starts. Looking forward to that. Unlike many here on ST, I love the taper. It usually marks the end of a job well done (the build phase) and the start of final preps for the big reward - race day. I guess i’m just lazy enough to enjoy that feeling “shouldn’t I be doing more? - no, I should be resting just like I am.”
My wife who is doing IMC for the second time has had an amazing training year including a breakthrough performance at Great White North 1/2 where she finished 6th in a large age group and lowered her pb at that race by 24 minutes. She has prepared herself for an excellent day at Penticton. I am very excited for her.
Tim,
Well I’ll be at Wright’s Beach Camp from the Wednesday on too… there was a number of people there for IMC last year, so I expect much the same for this iteration. I’ll be at the Friday dinner with my two children in tow - I wonder if the announcer can mention this forum and the people on it? It’s a big part of many lives in the tri community -especially IM. it would be nice to put faces on all of those ST handles - after all we’ll all see each other other there, particularly on the run. Mind you: it’s going to be very big. last year we stood in line for a couple of hours to get seated. And last year I hooked up with another IM and we biked swam and ran together (nothing too drastic, of course!) - these things are always better shared. j
I did my longest run on Monday 20 miles and my longest ride (120 miles) will be on Sat. I will also probably run 16-18 on Monday before my taper starts. I am racing an Olympic race next weekend as my last hard effort workout.
I feel pretty ready for my first Ironman and have confidence in the training I’ve done. Mostly nervous about nurtrition and a little about the run. I know training for an IM marathon is different then training for a stand alone marathon, but it’s hard to feel ready to run a marathon at the end of an IM when I feel no where near ready to run a decent stand alone marathon. I know many people that have had good IM runs and have never run a stand alone, so with my 7 marathons and a respectable 3:17 PR I should feel confident for the run, but actually knowing the training I put in to get those marathon results are actually making me more nervous.

Yelana, you’ll do fine. I’ve never done a stand alone running race in my life, but have done nearly 40 triathlons in 3 years. My only marathon was during IMFL and I think the excitement of the race and adrenaline carried me through the last 10 miles of that run.
Wow!! The most shocking thing I learned from this thread is how early people taper for an IM. Very interesting…
Thanks, Chris
