IMC aero helmet?

Well, the forecast is currently calling for a high of 91 degrees on Sunday. The hottest part of the day is usually later, probably around 4-5 pm, so it won’t be quite that warm during the bike (hopefully). But it will still be hot with temps most likely increasing throughout the bike. I wore my aero helmet two years ago when it was in the mid 80s. I didn’t have a good run but never felt that was due to heat.

So what do you think? What are you all going to wear? I’ve never really needed to make a decision like this before. I’ll definitely be sporting my desoto arm coolers under my wetsuit.

I’d wear an aero helmet…

yes-where it
.

wear, just be sure not to tape the vents.

What age group are you? If you are 40-44, no way in hell should you wear it.

you live in cold ass PNW…have you done heat acclimation training at all?

Sadly, no. We’ve had a nada summer. One day over 80 (and that was during the taper). Leg warmers and socks were the rule for most of the summer. Several days in the mid 70s, ~65 was the norm.

Just rolled into town about an hour ago. It always feels good to get back to this area.

Heat acclimation is mega heat/humidity sessions in your bathroom with the door closed and shower on.

If not, then…do you do well in heat regardless of any acclimation?

I LOVE this place. Next time i race this (4-5 years away) i’m coming up for a month to train. So amazingly good

My only races this year thus far have been in the OK valley!! Oliver half, Osoyoos half, and now IMC. I guess IMAZ will break the string in Nov.

I’d errr no helmet if forecast is to be believed and if you have a past history of not doing well in the heat. Some people can come right out of a cold environment and do okay in heat, others not. If you feel yourself the former go for the lid, if the latter, stick with training lid.

Which helmet improves my chances of being the first Bellinghamster?

Make your decision accordingly! Hope to see you out there!

Yeah, you know, I really don’t know. I’ve worn the helmet (Spuik Kronos) in many races, including hot ones such as IMC 2009, and Osoyoos Half the last two years. I have never felt anything bad during the bike leg. Never felt overheated, no head aches, woozyness, nothing like that. But, that being said, in all of those races I had shitty runs. I always chalked that up to poor nutrition, but I’m wondering if in fact I was too hot on the bike and it played a part. One of the big things (probably the biggest thing) that drives me crazy is that I never have nutritional problems in training. N. E. V. E. R. Then I follow the exact same programme in a race and things go haywire. It drive me (and my coach!) batty). So could the heat of the aero helmet be some sort of ‘unseen’ issue? I honestly don’t know. I hesitate to sacrifice the aero helmet, but of course I’d rather be able to run afterwards.

Hey, thanks to the aero advice (tire placement) you gave me in June I’ve got an awesome setup for Sunday. I’ll probably be moving too fast for you to see it.

Dude, I told you, your only chance is to LEARN TO SWIM!!!

the other thing is have you ever done formal testing. is that number that you think you are supposed to hold REALLY the number? or is it a guess? also have you power profiled?

50/50 yer call on the aero lid.

i strongly suggest not wearing it on the run so that i can see it there.

I should wear my wetsuit all day, right? I’ve heard buoyancy is key when running.

Nope, no lab testing. Doesn’t matter, my powermeter (ergomo) crapped out a few weeks ago. I’m doing this one on feel. I think a quarq us going on my christmas list.

i know a dude in a really cold race that wore a neoprene speedsuit for the whole day. it was like low 50s and raining at this race.

Your problem is pacing on the bike. You are very simply going to hard/fast and causing problems with your digestion system. You are diverting blood away from the stomach and systems needed to breakdown and convert your nutrition to energy. I would very strongly suggest you look at your pace and heart rate on the bike and reevaluate. Do you race with a power meter or only heart rate? Id ditch the aero helmet ala Crowie/Chrissie and see how things pan out.

I’m no expert but in my past experiences its usually a pacing/ too hard an effort that cause nutrition problems during an ironman. My 2 cents.

Good luck and I’ll be racing looking for you with a regular helmet as you blow by me!

Cheers
