Imaz?

I have been away form this forum for a week so I apologize if this is a redundant question.

Any news on IM Arizona? I saw that IMCA has been moved to mid-March. Any new developments?

A few of us were watching the tele tonight in AZ and the mayor of Tempe was on the news fielding questions about what he plans to do to make up for the football team leaving Tempe. His reply was that Iroman Arizona is coming next April, along with the Rock n Roll Marathon, etc etc. So there’s the answer. If he said it on the news…it must be true  Is the October Half Ironman AZ going to be a Hawaii qualifier and IMNA too?

“…but it’s a dry heat…”

Gotta love the dry heat right? So hot the past couple of weeks. Can’t wait to go back to Connecticut for a week and be able to train after 10am. I am super happy that Arizona, especially Tempe is going to be having a triathlon of this caliber. I would’ve never thought that Tempe would have been able to pull those kind of strings. Gotta Love Neil!

P.S. I hate Neil for his noise violation fines. Had a friend get one… $2000 later…

ASU SUN DEVILS!!!

Mid - March for Idaho 2005 ? Where did you read that. Siging up for 2005 but mid-march

makes it a no-go. Back to IMUSA I guess.

He means Ralph’s 1/2-IM Cali is mid-march now…not CDA.

I don’t think that any other IMNA races are changed except California. I could be wrong? when does registration open for the two races in arizona?

“…but it’s a dry heat…”

Yep,otherwise we would be swimming in 40 dgree water and biking in the snow.(possibly)
.

Registration should start next week for 1/2 Ironman AZ. Go to www.redrocktriathlon.com to pre-register. That is for sure going to be October 31st. I think it is awesome that the 1/2 and the full are coming to AZ. Jeff Suffolk of Red Rock is definitely bringing some high quality races to AZ. I am pretty sure that the 1/2 is not going to have a Hawaii qualifier in the first year, but plan to do so every year afterwards. Being able to do Ironman NA events at the end of October, beginning of March and the beginning of April all in the area of San Diego/Phoenix…priceless.

I am confused, is it a 1/2 in October or an IM in April, or both?

I had thought it started out as a full but then turned into a 1/2?

Is the Half going to be a Red Rock race, or an official Ironman NA race? If the latter, is Red Rock producing it for them, and doing the same for the full?

Thanks.

Yes, it is both. Red Rock is going to be supplying equipment and in charge of volunteers, and so on. It is Ironman NA though. It will crush the 1/2 that 3D has. With races like this, I will NEVER do a 3D race again. Red Rock really has their stuff together as well as Tucson racing which is doing the Rio Salado tri this month. I am sure that Red Rock will get their backing (Tucson) and the 1/2 will be a great race.

October 31st? That is just ridiculous! There has been a 3disciplines half ironman on the calandar for Novermber 7th since last year. What, can we do both back to back and count it as a full? Do you get a time bonus for dressing as a scarecrow, while they hand out trick-or-treat candy at the aid stations

I’m happy that both companies are interested in producing races in Tempe, but I wish they would show a little respect for each other’s events and not put such identical races back to back on the calandar. I mean, they are probably both in Town Lake, what’s the difference? I fear that neither will be a strong race because the field will be split between the two. For my money, 3discplines is in their second year with the race and probably less likely to have any snags, and they clearly established the date first. I’d really like to know what Red Rock is thinking on this…

I don’t think the April Ironman is confirmed yet. There will be a press release when it is official, and that hasn’t happened. I heard there is going to be a 2 mile swim event at the lake also, but I don’t see any announcement.

so far, i have been impressed with red rock, even if the races they have put on are just some short aquathons. but i do think it’s a bit bush league for red rock to slot their half a week prior to the 3d race. i still don’t feel like there are enough races in the phoenix area for two companies to get into this type of head to head competition. it hurts the consumers.

with that said, i think the red rock race is going to greatly affect the 3d race. i’d be willing to bet that anyone that was up in the air regarding whether they wanted to do a half at that time will sign up for the red rock race. especially with its affiliation with imna(not sure what the exact relationship is, but there will be slots available for imna races).

and in terms of differences between the races–yes the venue is the same, but there are many options as to where the course can go. the options increase the longer the race is. i did the 3d oly race in tempe a couple weeks ago. tucson racing is putting on a second oly distance race there in a week or so and the courses/style of the races are very different.

lastly, as for the full, sounds as if the last thing that needs to be worked out are technical/jurisdictional issues. could it fall through? i suppose, but i think it’s very unlikely that it will…

“For my money, 3discplines is in their second year with the race and probably less likely to have any snags”
Hmmmm… Anyhow, I’ve heard that the half ironman in October is hosted by Red Rock and the April race is hosted by IMNA. Dan, I think the difference between the two Half IM’s is that the one on October 31st is a qualifier and the other one is just the distance and not usat sanctioned? I would ask Slowman if you can do both and consider it a full since they are a week apart.

You’ve got a good point as to what they are thinking putting two races on back to back. I just went to the 3D website and if you look they have a race virtually every available weekend. That’s great for the sport, but I wouldn’t complain if another company desides to set up camp the one weekend they are not doing an event.

…but it’s a dry heat…

it has to do with the cardinals and the sun devils football games. that was the only free weekend. red rock posted on this recently. I thought & still do to a degree that it was pretty shitty as well

Sactioning and IM qualifier mean nothing to me. Lower cost and a good race are the factors I care about. Any pricing on the Red Rock race?

last i saw the redrock was already more expensive than the 3d race. that was before registration opened for redrock.

I checked the pricing out. The Red Rock race is $165 up unitil Sept 30. Registration for the 3D race is $100 + you get last years gear bag if you get in before May 15th. That’s a pretty big price difference, although it sounds like Red Rock is trying to make it a premium class event.

especially with its affiliation with imna(not sure what the exact relationship is,
From what I understand, it will not be an IMNA event per se, but will offer Kona slots. So it will be like 1/2 Vineman, Buffalo Springs, and Blackwater Eagleman, as opposed to like Ralph’s and 1/2 IM Florida, which are actually put on by IMNA.
