Anyone have a gross idea of teh expected water temp in tempe in later nov? I’m trying to figure out if I can get away with a sleeveless suit, or will need to wear my fullsuit. If I need to use the fullsuit I will have to try to get some swims in to adjust to the shoulder differences. Thanks

I think this may have historical temps. I gotta imagine it will be ~63-65F at race time.
If you’re comfortable with a full suit it would definitely be the better option as it’s faster than a sleveless wetsuit. Water temperature should be cold enough that you won’t over-heat. If it’s not an issue bring both and test them out during the week as they will open up Tempe Town Lake for a few practice swims (I believe Thurs., Fri., and Sat.).
When talking about Tempe town lake, everyone has a ‘gross idea’ indeed
.
I don’t understand the aversion to TTL.
- Roughage is good for you.
- TTL is like a liquid salad.
- Therefore, TTL is good for you.
It’s no worse that Saguaro, IMO.

What’s the deal with the swim there? I heard (perhaps incorrectly) that the swim is in a man-made lake/river? I’m from Florida and don’t really know what to expect.
its like swimming in a canal like you’d find near the airports in Florida, but without the alligators.
would love to do IMAZ again but cannot face that foul water
.
I don’t mind swimming in TTL. I’ve done lots of races there and I’m racing there again this weekend, SOMA 1/4man.
If you want a gorgeous swim, then race on Nov 9th in Parker AZ. The BlueWater Triathlon is held on the Colorado River. You swim across the river from AZ to CA, take a left in the channel portion on the west side and swim WITH the current, take a left again and swim back from CA to AZ. As you approach the east side of the river you actually catch an “up river” current as you head back to T1. The water is awesome, cool, and clean!! I hate swimming but its by far the best swim I’ve done in 18 years of racing.
I’ve done SOMA and the practice swim for IMAZ last year. The water temp was 62 degrees at race time. The water itself is murky, can’t see at all but it didn’t smell bad or anything. With it being refilled I have no idea what to expect. A current water temp would be great to know but their site that shows it is not showing temp. I have swam in worse for sure. I am wearing a full suit, there were people that didn’t last year and they were wrecked coming out of the water. I actually saw a couple people wearing the silver heating blankets as they left T1 like capes.
BTW… Good Luck IMAZERS
I wore a sleeveless last year and was fine (as previously mentioned water temperature was about 62 degrees). I was a little cold waiting for the start, but once I started swimming my arms were fine. Then, in T1 I pulled on a long sleeve shirt to make sure I was warm enough. The shirt got ditched at Special Needs.
I thought the water temp at IMAZ was shockingly cold last year. I had flown in for SOMA the month before as a test race and could not believe the water temp drop in a month, like from 70’s to low 60’s. I swam 1:10 (slow for me) at IMAZ and was very cold, even in a full wetsuit and thermal cap. (Caveat - I’m a 118 pound old lady). My feet were just screaming on the run to T1 outta the water.
I come from Idaho, which has more than it’s fair share of cold water and TTL was cold IMHO.
I would suggest FULL SUIT FOR SURE.
I don’t mind swimming in TTL. I’ve done lots of races there and I’m racing there again this weekend, SOMA 1/4man…
HUH?!?! Did I miss something? This race is back on?
I thought the water temp last year was just about perfect, my Polar measured it at 16C/61F.
Then again I had been training in a lake that was 10C/50F - after that Tempe Town Lake seemed almost tropical
check the post date, someone dug this up from 2008

BLAST! Sorry, I’ll sit down and shut-up now. Thanks for the pointer.
Wow…note the date on this thread. I posted that remark about the SOMA 1/4man** 2 years ago**!!!
