Who on here is doing IM Wisconsin? Where do you stand in your training? Maybe we can use this forum to discuss training/racing ideas and questions. This is a tough, tough bike course.
I’m probably averaging about 15 to 18 hrs of training right now. Long bike so far of 4 hrs, and long run of 2 hrs, have developed some IT band problems, and have backed off the past couple weeks. However, I raced this past weekend and am feeling better. I will start some hill training a couple weeks, would like to get 3 to 4 50 to 80 milers in on very hilly terrain.
I’m in but, no offense here dude, you better get started on them hills. I’ve got at least 10 50+ mile rides in the hills so far with 1 century and another on sunday. I’m aiming for a 5:30ish bike split. I don’t know what your goals are but I got my butt kicked by IMUSA last year and it won’t happen again. Get out there now!
Long run of 1:45, throw in a couple other 45min and 1hr runs during the week. Finally starting to get a little confidence in going long on the run.
Biking is lagging as I have been focusing on developing my running. Ramping up the bike now. Will be in Madison the 16-17 to ride the course. Not too concerned about this.
I have been swimming 1:15 3 times a week
Heading to Colorado Springs July 29-Aug 4th for a training week.
I’m in. Training is ramping up nicely, despite the 90+ temps around here at the moment. I usually start an IM season heavy on the running while the weather’s crappy to build base, and then turn my attention to the bike when the weather improves. Got in a spring marathon and a 50K and I’m trying to hold 30-40 mi/week running which includes a session of long intervals/hills and a weekend long run of 15-20. Biking has been picking up - around 200 mi/week. Got in a couple centuries and made my first trip up to Madison a couple weeks ago to ride 2 loops. The hills are all still in their proper place, and haven’t gotten any smaller. My swimming is o.k., but I’d rather invest the time in the bike or run…currently putting in 3 sessions/week totalling ~10K meters. Gotta step that up a little. Still trying to get to my fightin’ weight so I’ll have time to let it stabilize - don’t wanna go into taper mode still trying to cut a few pounds.
I’m in. I’m struggling to hit 15 hours. Swimming 2-3 x per week, 3000-4000 yds a shot. This weekend will be the first 100 miler. Monday’s bike workout is the hilliest route I can find, repeating the bigger hills, about 2.5 hours. Run 3-4 days a week, long run is around 2 hrs. No injuries to speak of currently (thanks to off-season weight training, I believe).
I’d like to make a trip to Madison, but I don’t know if I’ll make it.
I’m in…but this training thing…what’s that about? Between the kid, work and the such I’m struggling to get 10-13hrs in.
Did get a chance to do the course, everything except the leg in and out of Madison? Did the loop twice for 80 miles or so.
I really don’t think the course is super tough and I’m not a good hill rider. There’s a few climbs but not to rough. Most of the rollers you can build up enough speed on the down on most to get a good way up the other side. I might change to a different cassette so I can spin a bit more to save the legs…but then again save them for what? My slow swim 7 1/2 hr bike and 6hr marathon is likely to get me kicked off Slowtwitch for not meeting the 13hr cutt off.
I am in. Really tired now too. 4 1/2 hour ride on hilly course this past Sat., couple rides around 4 hours. Done plenty of 2 hour runs, up to 2:45 (had been training for an early summer marathon). Only about 13-14 hours of training last week, my coach gave me 2 days off last week. Need about 10. Glad a recovery week is coming up.
I’m in also. Swimming has been consistently around 9,000 per week (all in a lake due to pool being closed for repairs), and have done about 6 century+ rides, including a couple of epic 150-160 mile rides. BUT… I couldn’t run for about 2 months due to a calf injury. Finally running 4-5 times per week, but have yet to run longer than 6 miles at one time. I feel my endurance is great, but I’m wondering if I can work back up to the distance in two months!!
I am signed up - is that different than “In”? Had surgery in March which didn’t do anything for the running base I didn’t have…so I am nervous but motivated? I don’t really have a problem with hills, as in I usually don’t have to get off the bike and walk but how bad are they really? I did CDA in 03 and can’t make heads or tails of the bike profiles on the IM race sites. Someone mentioned changing cassettes - what is recommended for people just pedalin to make the cutoff? I shouldn’t read this stuff - reading how far along you all are in your training is scaring me…
I’ll be there for IM #1. Training is going well. Usual week right now is 3 swims, 3-4 bikes, 6 runs (running is my weakness). Longest ride was last saturday at 6:15, longest run was 2:20. Only one ride so far at 100+, but several 80 milers. More long ones to come. Sadly, there are no hills here, so it’s all flat flat flat. I’m going to make the 3-4 hour drive to Madison sometime(maybe twice?) to ride the course. That’s the only hill training I’ll get!!
In as well. Longest ride 80 miles, a bunch of 60 milers. Longest run 2h, with a bunch of 1.5-1.75s. Swimming…what’s that? I’m trying to go out as much as possible in the middle of the day in this heat…with my theory, albeit weak, being that if I can “man up” and take it slow and steady in this (92+, 60% humidity) then I will be ready for race day, whatever it brings. Not racing much this year so I can get in bigger weekends this summer. Starting mid-July I will begin my steady diet of 60 mile half IM pace ride Sat followed by a 2h run and a 100 mile “spin” on Sunday up until 3 weeks out. Planning at least two trips up there to ride two loops of the course. Most likely on a Sunday if anyone wants to join in (18.9 mph last year…looking to go closer to 20 this year).
I am not, but wish I were! I’ve done it the last 2 yr hoping for a cool day and both yr have been 90 or higher. Means you all will have a great day with temps in the 70, little wind and a partial overcast to keep el sol away. I’m right there with you in the time department. Go in hoping for a 12 and winding up with close to a 15. I will come back and do better - maybe next year. Thinking about coming up to volunteer. Great course and great people. Good luck!
I’m in. Taking a short mid-season break…but then will ramp up again. I am sort of on a swim focus right now…swimming every day while I go easy on the running and biking. After the July 4th weekend I expect to start getting some centuries in and some 2-3 hour runs. This will be my first IM, so my main goal is to finish.
Wis and N Illinois triathletes… Joe Bonness is the guest speaker at the July 16th carbo party for the Pewaukeee (Wis) sprint. I am sure he will talk about the IM Wis course and answer questions. It’s only a $10 ticket, including the meal. A bargain anyway. www.midwestsportsevents.com/midwestsports/tds+pewaukee+triathlon/default.asp
I had a chance to do two loops of the “loop” part of the course last weekend. this portion contains all but one of the major hills. For me a fairly non experianed and slow rider with mostly flat stuff under my belt I didn’t find it to be to much and not as challenging as I expected.
That being said I was riding an 11-23 and if I wanted to “spin” up the hills I definately would need something larger. Not sure exactly what to step up to but…something larger.
The part on the course that has me really worried is actually a fairly curvy and steep decent. Not being a “great technician” on the bike I’m hoping there are no “surprises” as I descend. Some one freaking out, stopped in the road, debris etc etc would not be good. Also concerned that if I go to slow I may cause problems for those behind. Going uphill can only ruin teh rest of your race. Wiping out going downhill can ruin the rest of your life.
150 miles rides…damn, that’s impressive, your bike fitness should be off the charts. Depending on what your goals are that will make your run feel a lot easier. But I would be worried without getting in at least an 18 miler, just get your feet and joints used to the pounding. Still plenty of time though!
I’m in. I am in the first week of my final base cycle. I’ve got several 2+ hr runs in, 3 100+ mile bikes, and then all sorts of filler. Swimming is average about 10k meters per week. If I survive this cycle of training I’ll be ready for the race.
Did a half this weekend and was really happy with how I did on the bike, after comparing it’s elevation profile to that of IMOO, they seem pretty similar. But I’m going to drag the wife to Madison in a few weeks to do that stick and one loop or so.
