My second IM. No land speed record, but I went 12:44:xx in my first last year. I am going sub 12 this year. What about you?
It will be my first. I’m already starting to freak a bit.
I have three basic goals.
Goal #1 is to just finish. This is top priority.
Goal #2 is to finish with a 12 as the first number…12:xx.xx This is pretty realistic. I can swim in :55 or so. bike in 6:00 - 6:30 barring a setback. That leaves me 5:30 to finish the marathon. And while the run is my weakest…I really should be able to manage a 5:30. Hell…I could probably finish the first half of the mary in 2:00 and then walk in a 3:30 to make it in under 13. But Goal #1 superscedes #2…so if I have to crawl on all fours…so be it.
Goal #3 is only to be considered if I hit mile 15 of the marathon in good condition and I am in position to break 12 hours. For that to happen I will have gone about a 6:00 on the bike. And obviously I will have taken the first part of the run easy and still been in the 2:15 range for the first half…and still feeling good. We’ll see. Goals 2 and 1 are the priority. Breaking 12 hours is a stretch and while it will be in my mind…I am not counting on it.
Fun stuff. It looks as if it will be cool out…and for me that is a very good thing. I’ll happily take a couple showers over 100 degrees.
Did I mention I am starting to freak? I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight. Tons of energy and nerves all rolled into one.
Well, I’m going to go to Lake Monona and swim, and then I’m going to go to Monona Terrace and get my bike. And then I’m going to go to Verona. And then I’m going to go to Mt. Horeb. And then, I’m going to go to …
Ever heard of quiet confidence or karma?
This is why I’m not touching this one at all. My two best IMs were my first two (This will be my fifth), and I’m in better shape now than I was for either of the first two. Add the projected weather and things are shaping up nicely.
Never quiet Karma, but I have heard of saying goals out loud and then meeting them!
I have trained for it. I have visualized it. Now, I am going to do it.
Relax and enjoy the ride. You will do great!
Fuck Karma. Grow some balls you fucking twats! The man set a goal and now he is going to go get it.
Exactly!
nothing like posting your goals for all the world to see (you know, since slowtwitch is all the world). here you go:
under 10 hours and a ticket to kona.
57 swim, ~5:30 bike, ~3:20 run
this is IM #5 for me, and my second in madison. i also put up a 4:33 half without a taper. but, there’s still plenty of work to do on sunday
What AG are you in?
m25-29
.
last year kona in M25-29 took a 9:39.
Not intending to be a downer, just helping you to prepare yourself.
good luck.
yeah, i saw that. the previous 6 years though 10:00 make it though. i can only control what i can do though - the plan is under 10, and i hope that kona comes with that. if i break 10 and miss kona, i don’t think i have much room to be disappointed, i just need to go faster next time.
first im, goals:
- sub 5:20 bike
- sub 4:15 run
- sum 1 hour (really sub 55) swim
for a total time less than 10:55
.
Starbucks for Breakfast
Dotty’s Dumpling Dowry for Lunch
Noodle & Co. for early dinner
Great Dane for late dinner
Spectating
Time’s a crapshot, but the main goal right now is to give this look: to at least 60 UW girls as I hobble past.
12:02:xx at vineman full on august first. Anything faster than that at MOO.
At about 10pm I am going to cross the line with a walker/stroller, dog in the stroller. I am going to pick up a hottie at a local “Cheese Eaters Adictions” support group meeting and bring her with…in a Borat style Speedo…so, if any of you have a kid I can bring with me…we plan to ROLL over the line, shove someone over, do a few push ups and then propose to the first woman I see on bent knee at the line.
No, i am not officially entered in the race either for that matter.
