IM WA Race Report

First off, great race venue! Wonderful place for a vacation. People here are great. Race was very well run!

Second, Shortis is world class, this will not be the last we see of him.

Third, for those interested my race report can be viewed here (it was a tough day at the office but I did finish): www.scottkmcmillan.wordpress.com

Cheers,
Scott

Good RR and well done! I was beginning to wonder if anyone here knew or cared that IM WA was this w/e? Jellyfish! Nothing like that at IMC (unless there really IS an Ogopogo). j

.

Great report Scott , thanks for posting and well done !

Think you learned some valuable lessons on the bike

I raced the inaugural IMWA ( 2004 ) , great race , great people and a fun course.

I’d be interested to hear what you did to your stroke to improve it .

Rest well !

It got simpler. What I truly did was, I had a consult with Karlyn Pipes Nielsen while I was in Kona this year. She is a great teacher and tremendous swimmer.

Check out my link to her DVD here on my site: http://www.bluemoosecoach.com/links.html.

The videos are some of the best I have ever seen. Clearly shows the stroke.

Eye openers for me were to use a wider entry and wider pull. Also to swim flatter. Everything else I was trying to do (high elbow for instance) fell into place when I made these major changes.

Scott,

Great work , thank you very much !

Wow, that’s interesting. It seems that too little body rotation is a big problem for most triathletes. Were you over-rotating, and now have a normal amount, or do you now have a very flat stroke?

Nice race, 10:01 when things go bad is pretty damn good!

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, we just got back to our winter training grounds in Albury, NSW.

Yes, I was over-rotating and trying to drive power from rotating and slicing through the water. As a result I had a terrible time keeping my elbow high and keeping a straight line.

I would suggest that Karlyn beleives in a flatter stroke compared to popular swim coach opinion. She is the first swim coach who has told me to swim flat. Now, she still wants rotation at the hips and shoulders, however, the emphasis is really on first section of the pull. She emphasizes reaching far out and if you do that you will rotate without thinking much about it. She also emphaises that everyone should find out what works for them. Everyone is a little different. Experiment and see what happens with your times.

Thanks, 10:01 was super tough that day. I went there to battle and I am happy I did even though I was way off my expectations… I am glad I did not DNF.

Great RR, I finished IMWA last year (2005) and while the conditions were challenging that day, I still loved it, the whole day, the city and the people are great. Good on ya mate for sticking in there. Have a cold one for me.
