I’ve been having a discussion with a friend concerning amount of time spent on training to be top 5-10% at the HIM distance vs IM distance.
My contention is that teh difference in time spent is likely not a whole lot and certainly not half. In fact I went so far as to say it’s likely very nearly the same as those that are top 5-10% at the HIM distance are likely also top 5-10% at the IM distance.
So what say yea?

NO way do 1/2IM’ers train only half as much as full IM’ers (cough as far as I know). I’d bet the training time is roughly equal. I’d like to see (in soime detail) the difference between 1/2IM training and full IM training. Perhaps some of the coaches can elaborate.

I could see that being very possible. Would it take very long to look at the prominent IM and 1/2IM races and see if there are names in the top 10% on both lists? It would be interesting.
Put the word “Wife” or “girlfriend” in the title and this thread will light up like the 4th of July.

Well actually that’s kinda what gave me the idea that the top HIM racers are also the top full IM racers. I seemed to recognize several names at the top of the list for Racine HIM as top finishers at other IM’s.

If this doesn’t work I’m adding GF to the header sa suggested.
I too would bet that they are very close to the same for the top guys. Maybe a bit more on the bike for the folks who are dedicated IM racers, but most of the big name 1/2 guys are just using the 1/2’s as a tune up for the big show.
Admittedly just an old lady AG’er, but have had pretty good results at HIM and am curretnly working at translating that into IM success.
My training volume/intensity has not significantly changed. Only real difference is a few 5-7 hour rides and a couple +2 hour runs. Everything else is virtually the same.
