IM Training with Gatorskins

Continuing the discussion from IM Training with Gatorskins:

I was running the tubeless gp5000 for training…… after a flat nearly every ride I switch to training on pirelli cinturato velo….. southern Chicago northern Indiana roads are horrible

I have been oon Gatorskins like forever. I am not a racing snake but live in South Africa where punctures are an isuue on training and racedays. I would rather be a bit more uncomfortable than having to stop and fix punctures. They are a bit of a problem getting on and off, but only if wire beaded. The ones without wire bead I get on and off my American Classic wheels without tyre leavers. I cannot vouch for other tyres as I have not ridden them, but that is my experience with the Gatorskins.

I used to do that as well until I moved to tube less and carbon wheels became really year round propositions as opposed to just race day.

If you’re concern in puncture resistance, consider going tubeless, if your wheels are tubeless ready or compatible. I think training in Gatorskins is fine, just like running in heavy training shoes.

Go for the bullet proof Schwable Marathon touring tyres…Bloody things are indestructible and when you get back to racing tyres you will feel so fast you will freak out.:rofl::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

After my last fully loaded bike tour I got home and next day was club ride on the road bike. Nearly crashed riding out the carpark as the steering was so bloody quick and light.

I can totally relate…and the other way as well.I get lots of guys asking if they can take my loaded bike and trailer for a spin but I say no every time as it takes a while to get used to dealing with aĺl the weight and they would most likely crash and break something.

Yeah, I had a scary moment with a Bob Yak in the late 90s. Was freewheeling down a hill, not crazy fast, but the (unbraked) trailer started bouncing side to side and that was pushing the bike. I was well out of control, with a milk tanker coming past me.

Was a good trip though having survived that.

at the end there is only one answer if you are faster than your training partner use the gatorskins and get a better training in (most likley )
if you are slower than use the 5000.
the rest is just silly a gatorskin is perfectly ridable in training.
