IM training on Oahu- no car, Tripler area

I’m new to ST but am a longtime lurker w/ a new training problem.

I’m registered to race IM Moo and will be arriving in HI on the 28th of July and spending the next 4 weeks living in Tripler Lodge and playing w/ the tiny ones. I know that there’s a pool but what about biking and running routes? I’m limited by the lack of a car to safe areas I can ride to and I’ll admit to being a rural type that isn’t real comfortable w/ urban riding. Hilly riding would be a good thing though based on the WI course(climb, descend, turn corner-repeat).

I’d actually be interested in renting a bike trainer for the month but I don’t know how to go about doing that. Do people even ride trainers in HI:)
TIA

Tripler is on a hill so you are guaranteed at least one hill every day  The problem with Hawaii, Oahu, at least, is there is alot of traffic and it can be scary riding. You could head over to Hickam and do some riding there on post…doing loops—no hills there though. There are some great climbs in Aiea area. Aiea loop trail is excellent running trail, just don’t go off the trail—you WILL get lost. The pool at Tripler is nice, wierd distance though—I think its a 33 yard and can be chilly believe it or not. there is a “bike path” around Pearl Harbor but not really suited for speedy riding, good for running though. Obviously plenty of open water swimming to be had. You really should consider renting a car if you can afford it…that way you could get in some good open water swims. A group meets on weekends for swims…google Waikiki Swim Club for more info. Hickam also has some great spin classes—I know, I know that is a touchy subject on ST but sometimes you do what you gotta do. Hickam is riding distance from Tripler. PM me if you want specifics. I lived there for 7 years and my husband is from Oahu.

Hey - welcome to Oahu!

You’ll be in a great spot for heading out to the North Shore - and Pineapple Hills. All you’ve got to do is head west a little to Kunia Road, then turn north. You’ll find the hills, then descend to the north shore for some rural riding. If you head west after coming down to the ocean, you’ll have a nice 15-20 mi straight stretch out to Kaena Point. The pineapple hills create a large loop - there are only a couple of roads to Waialua & Haleiwa - you’ll find them.

There isn’t any safe riding here - shoulders are narrow, tourists are checking out the view or fiddling with cameras while driving, and people are hit frequently, so be wary. But heading north will keep you out of Honolulu and the worst of it!

PM me if you want to jump in with some long group rides - there’s a big group training for Kona.

And Boca Hawaii might rent you a trainer. We do have them here
