So after IMC this year (my first IM) I’ll be going straight to Burning Man in Nevada (the next day, anyway). I’ve been to BM before, so I know what I’m getting into. However, I haven’t done an IM before, so that’s another story.
Any suggestions for surviving going straight to a true desert after IM? I don’t do any of the “recreational” recovery “aids”, so that won’t be a worry.
My plan is quick recovery food/drink, ice bath, elevate the legs for up to an hour, and hydrate! Any other recovery tricks out there?
Jeebus man, that is quite the schedule. Knowing what the playa does to me, I’d count on spending the first day there recovering, as hard as that may be.
Being wide open at a long race then going straight to the playa…I’d say treat your trip down here as T3, and BM as the fourth leg in a weeklong race.
Just pace yourself; you certainly don’t want to be burned out by Thursday…
And you’re obviously welcome to drop by my home at Camp Toxic Martini at 7:30/Boreal. Martini parties Wed. and Fri. PM, and Bloody Mary Party Sun. AM.
We got the cure for what ails ya.
whaddya mean? not only is the playa billiard-table flat for miles in every direction, but he has a whole week of recovery rides on a glow-in-the-dark bike to look forward to! sounds like the perfect prescription to me!
It’s going to be a journey - that’s for sure! Man to man. The only stairs I anticipate will be stepping up onto the art cars to get my butt around the playa!
I hope you are not driving from Penticton to BM? Really important to get OUT of the car EVERY FEW HOURS and walk around, whether from RNO to BM, or longer. And don;t forget to drink shitloads of water before hitting the Playa, and there for the first 2-3 days. And walk around once you get there, even if it is not pleasant.
You’re my kinda crazy.
Our camp is putting together the BRC 5k race / fun run this year.
Thursday morning, 8am
From Center Camp around the Man and back.
Water provided, bring a sippy cup.
Top male/female win a case of PBR.
rad.
given how Wednesday night usually goes, the fun run may be my night-night activity.
previous invitation extended to you and obviously any other burners among us to come party at Toxic Martini.
Others will cringe when I say, make friends with a nurse and get some RL bags for the trip down there. 3-4 of those and you’ll be fine. (Oh, and my anesthetist wife reminds me that shouldn’t also be confused with the need to drink water as well).
Your biggest risk is dehydration. Address that and you’ll be ok, if a little sore.
I’ll throw in my 2 cents as well. Not only am I incredibly achy after an IM (BTW a good Monday-morning massage is hugely helpful), but I tend to get puffy and swollen, especially if I sit still for too long. So compression socks might be helpful. And, like others have said, lots of water!
Yup, driving… Planning on lots of walk breaks. Should be interesting! Fortunately I won’t have to do much of the driving myself. I want to pitch in, but we’ll see what I’m capable of…
