IM St. George.....Holy S*@T

I’m a MOPer and have done Silverman, IM CDA (twice), Wisconsin, Florida, Cananda and AZ. I went down to St. George to ride the IM bike course and was floored/shocked. I believe this course will be as hard or harder than Silverman. The run course is also very hilly. This has got to be the hardest IM event. I’m excited…but now also peeing my pants.

Seriously? The bike is THAT bad? The run looks insane.

Bring it on!

I guess I picked the right event for my first IM.

I’ll probably preview it sometime in the next few months.

I don’t know… doesn’t look that bad. Maybe 7000’ climbing? Same as CdA, less than LP. Those last dozen miless will be FAST. that’s for sure.

I like the course, should help keep the draft packs to a minimum.

man those last two hills are amazingly similar

=)
.

Will be way harder than the new CDA course.

Silverman is still tougher.

I did Silverman the first year…very difficult to be sure. After having riden St. George, I’d say that this one will rival Silverman.

I hate to repeat myself, but Silverman is still tougher.

I hate to say it, but repeating yourself is not more convincing. You may be right, but you aren’t very convincing.

Ok, got it. You must have also done the St. George course. You wouldn’t just come on slowtwitch and talk out of your ass if you hadn’t.

Yeah!!! Bring it baby! I am on the verge of pulling the trigger on Utah. Tough is good!

You can’t compare events. Its like surfing; Waimea, Mavericks, Bell’s, and Sunset are all great but the ‘best break’ is determined by weather and other factors.

Whatever has the worst weather (including headwinds) will determine which one brings the most suck.

The length and slope of mountains don’t change with weather. Look at the profiles of both courses. There is ALOT more climbing in silverman, starting with a bitch of a climb right out of T1. St. George will not be easy, but it looks like the climbing is not as steep and less up and down.

Those 2 climbs need a bra.

I also had a chance to do both the ride and the run in St.George. I must admit, that sucker is going to be TOUGH!!! The bike is hard enough, but I think that the real kicker is the combo of the bike and run course. The run is just brutal. There is ZERO flat. So, it’s tough it find a rhythm. I’ve done CDA, AZ, Wisconsin, Florida and Canada and my gut tells me this one will be the most difficult.

However, it has AMAZING scenery. The red rocks are incredible and offer a great venue. Also, I don’t think it’s out of the question to consider a road bike rather than a tri-bike. The course is hilly enough and has just a few straight sections that I couldn’t really feel like I was benefiting from my tri bike. Maybe a ITU setup is the way to go. I guess I have a year to make a decision.

At altitude in the desert. Those are climbs not rollers. There is a fair amount of easy climbing at LP or CDA due to the position of the hills

St.G will be a sufferfest

is a 30 mile climb of 2500 feet considered tough, what are the down hills like are they switch backs??

While we’re on the topic of Silverman. Does anyone have a course profile? Is it long rollers that go on and on or short steep cimbs that are never-ending? I’m in regardless. Just want to know what sort of pain I’m in for.

I agree with you. Most Ironman bike courses really aren’t that difficult, but the run is what seperates the tough from the insanely hard. What makes LP hard is the run. I have a feeling that will be the case here too.

What I don’t understand though is why people always bring up scenerly or lack thereof. Every race looks the same to me… A patch of pavement about 15’ in front of my bike.

Do you people really look around while racing?
