Just curious…Anybody know the stats for the % of people who check in for an IM (get chip, bracelet, etc) but don’t even venture into the water? There has to be some right? 1? 5? 10? >10???

IIRC, canada last year had over 25xx registered, and only 22xx starters (maybe low 2300 or so)…close to 300 (or more) drop out every year that i’ve done it.
now, that number changes depending on the race (hawaii, i’m sure is a much much smaller number), but i would wager at least 10% (2500x10% = 250)
Wow…That seems like a ton. Now 300 sounds about right from the TOTAL that originally signed up a year prior because I realize people need to drop out due to lack of training, job, family, $, injury etc…but I would think ( I could be wrong) that the amount of athletes who fully intend to do the race 48 hours prior would be a lot less.

oops, i misread the original post. my bad
My sister in law counted ~15 bikes still in T1 after the bike start cutoff at IMFL '06 and I think 5 at IMFL '05. Those are the only #'s I’ve ever heard.
That sounds about right, but those could be people who just didn’t finish the swim. There has to be some that get up and say F this, go down and get their bike, turn in chip, and head to breakfast. I seriously thought about it leading up to my first one. I thought for sure I was going to HONK big time, but managed to keep it all in.
If I am not mistaken there were 2500 registered for IMLP 07 and only 2208 in the water… so ~300 did not show up for various reasons.
Fred.
oops misread the post.
Everybody who started to swim, finished the swim @ IMLP07.
73 floks did not finish the bike for whatever reasons (injury, cutoff, etc.)
Then 84 fokds did not finish the run for whatever reasons.

I don’t believe anyone can pick up their bike or gear from transition until after the bike cut off. So, all the bikes left after the swim cut off never started the bike. Some may have checked in but never started.
