I think this is complete crap if there is no online sign up for Lake Placid.
How does IM expect to attract new participants to these races and showcase all of the different venues?
With this onsite stuff people will just continue to sign up for the same race every year.
Doesn’t seem to have been a problem this morning…
I just got off the phone with a friend who was at the race… 2200+ racers this year with 900 or so 1st timers…
As someone else posted about their observations that the town of Lake Placid had many more people as spectators. I’d bet these spectators were people who wanted to be in line at 5:00am for on site registration.
Sure it doesn’t seem fair… but from a business standpoint there is nothing wrong with it.
I have to admit it, it must be nice to be in the boat Graham Fraser is in.
A boat of 5,000 triathletes arguing over why they should be able to register over someone else? Not a boat that I would like to be in personally, but I’m glad that Mr. Fraser is able to put up with all of that and still pull off an awesome series of events. I can’t really complain about the registering a friend thing since I just got in to IM-LP '08 by that method. Seems to work pretty well from my perspective!
Can you sign up a friend at any Ironman registration. My first trip to Wisconsin I used online registration. I’m going to be on site this year to sign up for '08. I was hoping to sign up a friend as well, does anyone know if that is allowed at Wisconsin?
Just guessing, but perhaps the rationale behind this is to get more people to show up at the venue and spend money in the local economy. Could be a good way to help NAS’s relationship with the host town.
The only complaint I have is the constant “Will I be able to have a friend sign me up at IMxx?” I don’t care what the process is and NAS will NEVER make everyone happy but I’d like to see them establish one signup policy for all their events and stick with it. The event-by-event changes are getting old.

How has the registration policy changed from event-to-event? While I haven’t personally used it prior to today, I was under the impression that on-site registration was open to the individual present and one additional person for all events. I may be wrong, but the issue with IM-LP today was that a heck of a lot more people showed up to register on-site. Sounds like there are quite a few people who are pretty happy with how NAS manages the events.
Well, for starters IM Canada has been a bit different - at least lately.
In fairness to NAS, maybe it otherwise hasn’t been different - maybe it’s just an issue of not communicating their policy clearly. It just seems like a week or two before every MDOT event there is this mad crush where everyone’s asking “Can I sign up a friend?”, “When does registration open?”, “If I sign up a friend, what information do I need?” etc. etc. It seems like a couple of well-written, clearly-stated pages on their web site could handle all of this (for all events) once and for all.
Definitely. A statement on the web site would dispell most of the confusion. I’m sure that there would be a few who would use that statement to weasel around the policy, but it would be beneficial for everyone in general. Regardless, we all somehow find a way to register and race and have fun… and we shouldn’t argue with that.
