IM Lou - why only 50 Kona slots?

I know WTC runs this instead of NASports, but why only 50 slots instead of 80 like other races (at least the NA ones)?

Hi,

Guesses only:

  1. Each Kona slot costs the Race organizers approx. $1,000 or more
  2. Not too much space left on the pier and no one else in the group wants to give up their slots
  3. Non-wetsuit swim would thin the flock in proper Darwinian fashion and in the end, 50 slots would be proportionate to the number of appropriately fast finishers
  4. Lets see how the event comes off before we give it full rights

Because NA has enough spots as it is? Or maybe to many allready?

More slots should go to Europe. IM Austria is the 2nd biggest in the IM circus with 2200 athletes. Only 60 spots!!

I don’t get your reasoning about wetsuits. Qualifying has nothing to do with time, it’s about who you beat.

I think he’s saying that there will be fewer finishers, although the fast peeps are the most likly to shrug off a problem like no-wetsuits.

While your right WTC is running this race so has nothing to do with NA(formally IMNA)…
I believe(check old postings) louisville was originally going to be a 70.3 race but the minds that be from wtc liked the area so well and the race organization there they decided to make it a full ironman but had only allocated 50 spots at the time… But does that mean more spots next year who knows… The more races the less spots per race.
I can remember roth haveing 200 spots at one time I seem to remember at one time and imcanada and some of the early imna races had 100 to 120 spots at one time but now with all the different races they get smaller and smaller.

i do think they were planning for this event to be non-wetsuit
.

agree North america has enougth spots has it is europe should get more spots for there races rather than more american spots and that is from a north american based athelete. There is only so many people you get get on the pier so only a limit amount of spots available.

Because there is a fixed number of Kona slots to go around. Add more races and each race therefore gets less. Simple math really.

Austria has 50 slots

Just a quick run down on distribution of folks going to hawaii already north america compared to europe

I just did this quick so not exact just going through the list

519 from Europ(esp,deu,fra,uk etc etc)

From north america(us,canada,mexico didn’t include the islands(carribean).

56 canada
2 mexico
661

So 519 for europe 719 for north america.
Still some races to go louisville, imc and korea and I believe IMUK thats of 1500 or so currently in the race.
Of course any former winners get in anytime, age group winners from last year get in automatically
top 10 overall from last year get in male, female
Then theres lottery 150(50 of them intl) I think
and the sponser buy my way in folks and special interests

I think someone a while back did a breakdown based on population I did one quick study but can’t find it and don’t have time to do it right now.

Of course I think you will see lot’s more european’s qualifying at na events than visa versa(na going to europe) so that skews things if your looking for regional races)
So how does all that relate to population na to spots
eu to spots?
Only then can you get idea if theres bias.

Could get bit hairy do it by country or do you group all the countries of europe… Then how much participation is there in those countries for triathlon based on regular population… I’m sure germany is high up there.

Anyway any good statisticians out there want to tackle this go ahead…

Races with slots in na
imf,imaz,imcda,imusa,imc,imlou,imwis,cal 70.3,fl 70.3
bfsprings 70.3,honu 70.3,eagleman,vineman I’m sure I’m missing couple
Europe imuk,imswiz,imfrankfort,imaustria,monaco 70.3 imlanzorote,imnice

then rest of world
imnz,imaustralia,imwa,imkorea,imjapan,imbrazil

and new imchina next year I guess.

AS to the spots I didn’t look into that sure it’s somewhere.
