I am not a fan of Maher and I think he stepped over the line, if that exists anymore;
During Friday’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the late night host rejoiced Koch’s death, saying “(Expletive) him… I’m glad he’s dead.”
The biting words came after several jokes about the businessman, who is known for the empire he and his brother funded aimed at promoting conservative policies.
“He was 79, but his family says they wish it could be longer but at least he lived long enough to see the Amazon catch fire,” Maher joked. “Condolences poured in from all the politicians he owned, and mourners are being asked in lieu of flowers, to just leave their car engine running.”

I don’t think the gloating is good, but I can honestly say there are two guys, when they die, I will celebrate. Not throw a party celebrate but I’ll have a drink and be happy they died so they can’t ruin someone else’s life.
So is it wrong to ever gloat about someone’s death? If it is ok to gloat, what level of wrong is required to achieve that?
Gloating on the death of an individual could be understood if that individual harmed you or your family. And there are probably more exceptions… What Maher did wasn’t illegal, I just found it distasteful. Koch used democracy to fulfill his ideology. Should the left gloat because a right winger is dead? Is that where we are as a country? Disagree with me and I hope you die painfully? I hope not. And I have more respect for Bernie today than ever before;

I think he and his brother are two of the worst people of the last 20 years. Him being dead does not change my opinion of them. But it also does not mean his ideology dies with him. I won’t rejoice over his death but don’t expect me to mourn him either.

Yeah, it’s questionable that there really is a line anymore. We live in a time when the President is openly disrespectful to recently deceased Senator McCain. It wouldn’t surprise me at all that Maher might have used that as partial justification for delivering that harsh and shocking statement.
But Maher is an entertainer and comedian. He’s kind of a cable TV shock jock. That’s his shtick and it’s served him well and made him a bunch of money. I lump him in with Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern. It’s kind of their thing to be unlikable and brash.
I’ve never understood why people have to make comments like that after someone dies, is it that hard to just keep your mouth shut?

I view Maher as more or less the left’s equivalent of Ann Coulter, with about as much credibility.
I do watch his show as he occaisionally has interesting conversations, but he is a commedian first, and being a political commentator is way further down the list.

Yah he’s snarky, and I think he’s done some pretty funny stuff. and Yes he does get under conservative’s skin . . . and also liberals on rare occaision due to him being a libertarian

I’m generally a Maher fan, at least mildly, and certainly don’t feel any sadness to see Mr Koch leave us, but still agree it was definitely unnecessarily dickish to use his platform to gloat about it like that. His customary snark is well and good in most cases, but this would have been an appropriate juncture to show just a little more class.
