I’m a morning exerciser and I’ve been having a lot of trouble in October. Either I oversleep and have to cut my workout, or I just get nervous running alone when it’s so dark outside. Having sunrise one hour earlier really is great.
I realize now, that it just wasn’t sinking in when Congress voted to extend DST and now there are going to be dark morning extending into November. Bummer.
I hear what you are saying. As far as I am concerned, the sun can set at 4pm. I’m riding home in the dark after work anyway at 6:30 pm. I’d rather have daylight at 5:30 pm so that I can work out in daylight.
Bah screw the winter setting. It was light here until almost 7pm until yesterday. I could get home at 5:30 and go for a 20 mile bike ride before dark…now I can’t do squat. I remember living in Michigan it would be dark at 8am when I got to work and dark at 5pm when I went home. They should just leave it on summer time.
I’m not glad. When I ride to work, I leave home at about ~5:30am. Normally it’s pretty dead but today there was a lot more traffic. But it’ll be back to normal in about a week
amen. extending DST into november seems like a bit of overkill. I guess ridiculousness doesn’t matter as long as you can convince the public that you are actually doing something about energy costs. okay, I’m going to stop before I get too deep into lavender room territory.

I used to feel like you do about the shrinking amount of daylight, but now it doesn’t bother me anymore. In fact, I have grown to really dig it. I run on a golf course, and I bike in residential neighborhoods. I get a big thrill out of doing these activities in the dark (I have lights on my bike and feel completely safe on the loops that I do). Nobody gets out at night in this part of the world, and I feel like I have the outdoors to myself.
I’m with you. Since I’m on the far eastern edge of central time zone, I end up feeling like it gets dark insanely early in the winter. Today’s sunset: 5:02pm.
I’m pretty sure it’s in effect in 2007. We are converting to DST 3 weeks earlier in March on the 2nd Sunday in March and we are extending DST 1 week later in the fall to the 1st Sunday in November.
I’m never up early in the morning, so I like this new law.
I’m lovin’ the end of DST too! I’m able to get in my morning training and still go for a surf before work now! Stoked! Bummer it’s going to be extended! I remember as a kid, one year…probably around 1975 or so, they had DST all year long, and it was not good. Kids were going to school in the dark, and it was more of a safety issue, so they reverted back to the old system. I think Arizonians and Hawaiians have it right. Just keep Standard Time all year round. Do we really NEED it to be light at 8:30pm in summer?
I don’t think it’s the daylight at 8:30 pm that we’re necessarily seeking…it’s the whole not being dark at 4:30- 5:00 in the afternoon part that’s hard to swallow.
I see your point about the sun setting at 5pm this time of year, but think about the mornings. If they extend DST into November, it won’t get light until 7am by late November. That SUCKS in my opinion!
I checked, and the change will be effective in 2007. DST will start the 2nd weekend in March and end the first Sunday in November. So, 3 weeks earlier in spring and one week later in fall.
I hate moving the clocks back, it’s depressing seeing it get dark so early. I am a college soccer coach and when the clocks get set back it messes up our practice schedule badly, plus I like to train in the evening.
