Nicole Leder wins one of the best womens finishes I’ve ever seen!!! She eeks out a win from defending champ Andrea Brede. Running stride for stride until the last 50m, Nicole digs deep and wins by 5 seconds…
Great video coverage… Wonder why NA IM races aren’t covered like this… Truely fantastic race!!!
…and during the post-race interview Faris was very humble and real. Said that he was almost ashamed of his performance in front of the extremely supportive fans but that he just didn’t have it today - will power yes, peak performance no. Faris also quoted a German saying of “Hardship and Misery”, putting it as “Norman was hardship and I was misery out there on the bike.”
There were half a million people lining the shore, the bike course and the run course - per police estimate. And they showed it live on German TV for seven hours!!! They’ll also be live again for the last hour between 10 and 11 PM. Quite some coverage!!! The TV crew mentioned over and over again how impressed they were how humble and nice all the athletes are.
They ran together for 35km - absolutely epic! They had great coverage of them throughout the entire marathon… At most of the aid stations Nicole Leder would pull a step or two ahead, cut in front and grab the first cups, leaving less for Andrea Brede. Every now and then Nicole Leder’s coach would run up beside her, then they had him on the phone asking him what advice he had given. His reply was kind of cryptic, though. Then on the last bridge you could see one attack, a counter, another attack and neither would get more than a step ahead and the other would match - no change of expression in their faces.
In the interview afterwards Nicole Leder said that the entire last lap they were attacking each other constantly.
And Andrea Brede mentioned that she was probably too inexperienced and opened up the sprint too early, underestimating how long that red carpet is.
I was glued to the tiny WMP window, totally fascinating!
…and what of that do you need translated? There wasn’t any literary packaging around it as the “Not und Elend” (misery and hardship) comment. (I know that doesn’t translate well but it was a great line in German.) I think he said he wasn’t a machine in the same sentence when he said that he was ashamed of his performance. But then, I suspect your pulling my leg anyway…
