It’s been a sad day in Gerardmer…
As those who have been with us through the day are aware, we had the race marred by a serious accident today that has sadly claimed the life of 47 year old Belgium athlete, Alain Paquo.
Alain set out this morning to qualify for Hawaii, but lost his life on the first lap of the bike leg in a tragic single cycle accident.
He was declared deceased at the scene of the accident. There is as yet no information as to what the cause of the accident may have been nor the cause of death.
The greater Ironman family extends to Alain’s family, and his triathlon club friends competing with him, our greatest sympathies and sorrow at this time of such great loss.
This from Nick Munting:
<<<Yestereday’s accident was very sad - and more perplaxing as there were no witnesses and it was on a straight piece of road but they do know there were no other vehicles or bikes involved… >>>>
This type of incident, and more so those closer to home really touch me, and make me appriciate each and every day. Enjoy each and every training session/race/walk of life and show your families and friends you love them at every opportunity you can because you never know what is to come around the corner.
God bless

Any further information on this? I just got back from the Nissan X-Terra event we helped put on at Brighton Recreation Area and have been off the forum since about 6:00 AM until a few minutes ago.
