IM FL or IM Louisville?

IM Lou did not have the highest rate of DNF in 2010. Not even close.

What has your weather been for the past month? Comparble to what it is in FL?

WTF is IMKY its Ironman Louisville. Its named after the city not the fried chicken

KY = abbreviation for Kentucky. Some IMs are named after states. Some aren’t. For some reason people are confused about IM Lou. Not that it matters. Most people know what people are talking about when they say IMKY. The state. Not the fast food place.

Looking to do first IM in 2012. The choices are IM FL or IM Louisville. Any strong opinions either way?

Waffle House on every corner in Panama City. Where else are you going to find that?

Did Lou this year, my first IM so cant compare to Fl. We stayed at the seelbach which is literally right at the finish line downtown and it was very reasonably priced.
since the swim is a TT, the line is extremely long but I was lucky to be invited ( i think)to cut the line.
Bike is hilly but only 2 tough climbs and I hate climbing so just hit hills in training and you’ll be fine. Run was tough, but I didn’t care I finished.

Like I said…don’t quote me. “not even close”?..hmmm…will get back to you on that one unless of course you already have the data.

I’d be surprised if it got over 75 degrees that day in 2009.

Actually according to the internets, IMLou was 81 that year. Not nearly as hot as 2007, but not cool either. We were both rather wrong.

mwalder…please see this. “not even close” as in…the highest dnf ratio? thanks for playing…http://practicaltriathlon.wordpress.com/2011/08/

Louisville is an awesome race, beautiful bike course through rolling hills and horse country, unbelievable southern hospitality and volunteer support and guaranteed to be hot and sunny! I’ve never done Florida or Canada, but have met a lot of people that done both and most thought Louisville ranked higher in every category. Try it you’ll love it.

There was a little race in 2010 called IMChina - DNF rate 21%.

yeah…just like you said…louisville was “not even close”
.

Didn’t read most of this thread but I wanted to mention the weather. Everyone seems to bash Louisville for it’s hot temperatures. IMC was close to 100 this past year and I was fine in it. Just drink lots of water and keep yourself in check. Don’t avoid Louisville because of the heat.

The max temp at IMC this year was 86 degrees with humidity at 20%. Not cool by any stretch of the imagination but it wasn’t anywhere near 100. Let’s not get crazy. Louisville had almost exactly the same weather as Penticton this year but it got to 96 degrees in 2010 w/heat index over 100.

I did the inaugural Lou - unrelenting heat, but I’d choose it again over Florida mainly for the time of year of the race. The folks I know who do Florida always seem to be begging for run and ride, especially ride, companions. Most around here do their last big tri in August or September and are winding down in mid-October when IMFL training is peaking. Also shorter days may make getting weekday rides more challenging.

I stand corrected. Sorry I could have sworn I read it was 100 somewhere on a blog.

another “pro” for doing louisville, as i watch the finish at IMFL - the finish at IMFL sucks compared to Lousville (have not competed in IMFL but have been spectated). the louisville finish is really, really good…

I am highly considering IMFL but after looking at the time frame for training it may be difficult. I am in NE so it’s gets cold and dark here quite early. This could become an issue. Does IM Lou usually sell out? Seems 2012 is still open right now. How would Louisville compare to a course like Placid?

Louisville is very slow to sell out…you could probably get into it as late as february or even later…

isn’t louisville finish 4th street live or something? straight downtown and the excitement is good from what i hear… maybe in 2013, just signed up for FL for next year… so will have to see how that one goes.

Just got back from Ironman Florida. The course is flat and fast. Weather was perfect this year, calm water, 65F water – wetsuit legal, with 45F-70F air temps throughout the day (yes, 45F is cool but it was first thing in the morning).
