I was looking for suggestions on Bike transport for IM Cozumel. First off this is a one time shot as far as air traveling with my bike. All the races I do and plan to do in the future are all drive-able. I was a little disappointed when I contacted IM Cozumel and ask if they could recommend a Bike shop on the island or in Cancun and they said “No, they couldn’t”. I’m not sure if that means there are none or there are none they feel confident enough in to recommend. So I’m either looking at shipping it to a hotel or putting it with me on the plane. I don’t really want to by an expensive travel case but I don’t want my bike to get damaged and I want the least amount of breaking the bike down that’s feasible to keep things simple since I’m on my own with mechanics. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Norm.
Fly with the bike.
- Borrow a bike box
- Rent one from a LBS
- Get a cardboard bike shipping box from the LBS. Re-enforce with tape. I know many people that have flown around the world several times… with their expensive bike in a cardboard bike box… without incident. Carry a roll of packing tape in your carry-on, in case you have to open it for customs.
Breaking down a bike for transport is something anyone can do, and is not as difficult as it seems. Search the posts here for ideas… or google
