I’m looking at IMCDA or IMTX for next year but I live in a cold weather state in the northeast. I’m also 6’1 178lbs. I’m wondering what will be better IM to do. How much will I suffer in the heat for TX? But also the hills on CDA for a bigger athlete will be hard too. Thoughts?
It is 11:30am … Feb 25 … and my outdoor thermometer (in the shade) reads 85 in Houston. It was 70 when I left to workout at 3:30 this morning. Our humidity right now is 84%.
Can you handle our heat/humidity? Only you can make that informed guess. Normally, it is triple digit temps during IMTX in May … and we always have high humidity.
You may be in the wrong sport if you’re deciding on a race based on whether you’ll “suffer” or how “hard” it is. Choose based on the timing (IMCDA will give you a few more weeks to train) or the logistics of travel. I’ve done IMCDA 3 times and will always recommend it as a great race. I live in the PacNW and don’t really get outside to ride until March/April and have never had an issue getting the training in for the race. Also, the amount of suffering is directly proportional to the volume and appropriateness of your training plan regardless of the race. Train right and suffer a lot less (or maybe no suffering at all).
IMCDA no question over IMTX. Better place. Better race. It’s a little piece of Heaven if you ask me. IMTX. I’m from Dallas. No thanks.
The amount of suffering between trained and untrained never ends its just over a lot faster for the trained haha
.
Since when is 6’1", 178lbs a “bigger athlete”?
I’m 6’3", 195lbs with a goal of getting down to 183lbs. If you are concerned with your weight, drop 5 lbs and race CDA.
I’ve only done CDA once (2nd time coming in a few months). The hills are not that bad considering you train for that sort of thing.
In my opinion it would be much “easier” to train (I use that term loosely and in regards to ability to train for the specific area) for hills over trying to replicate training for hot weather…you can only control one of those two factors.
Full disclosure is I’m originally from CDA so I much prefer the area, however I was also stationed in TX off/on for 3 years. Given the option between those two locations I would always choose CDA.
I’m also 6’1 and weighing in around 175. IMO I’m too thin, so not considering myself a bigger athlete.
