Has anyone heard any new info on the two wave start for IM Canada
.
According to the IMC chat pages, organisers are still planning one wave of about 2300 people (not counting the pros, who start at 6:45am.)
.
bbu…bu…but I though they had 2700 people signed up…?
- actually I just used excel to count: 2811 people signed up. j

Sweet Jesus! Guess I need to add some time to my projected finish to account for waiting on the beach for 5 minutes until the madness gets a bit of a head start!
ironman canada as one of the biggest start area in the world of ironman. To complain of mass start dosnt make sence there. The problem is even the slow swimmer want to be in the inside to not have to swim 1 extra meter and take the shortest line. You can easily go 200m outside the course at the start, swim about 10-20 more meters than everyone at the end of the day and be alone quiet and 5 minutes faster with a enjoyable swim. The lake is 96km long by many km wide, people need to realise that swimming on the outside of the course is not much longer and a lot faster…
Yes, they have about 2800 people signed up but I’m sure at least 10 - 15% will no-show.
Thanks, Chris
C’mon, that’s what you were training for at the Ocean Fest – all that crashing and bashing, it’s confidence building!
lakerfan is right: from what I could get on the chat pages and based on past IMC numbers, organisers assume 300-400 people who have signed up won’t show up. Last year I remember the Participants List on the IMC website changing quite a bit in the weeks prior to the event as people formally withdrew.

Ha, ha. That’s why I started at the back of the pack in that event!
I have to agree with you. Last year I started towards the outside and kept things under control quite easily. Swam a few more metres but I was able to have a nice relaxed swim without any trouble pretty much from start to finish. It is a long run out to the buoy and a long run back with lots of room to spread out. I had a 1:10 swim which means that I was pretty much right in the busiest of times and it wasn’t bad at all. I don’t think that IMC needs a second AG wave unless they had something like 3500 people. It is a terrific swim course with a good layout and lots of room.
Jonnyo,
Just curious if you have any recommendations regarding the start location for a 1:00 to 1:02 swimmer? I started on the inside last year and it was okay…except for turn 1. That was a bit rough but it doesn’t bother me too much. Corner 2 was a minor scrum but doable. The home stretch back to the beach was sweet!
it really depends if you like to swim alone or with people, i most of the time recommend starting on the outside and making your way in slowly when things get more streach out. That s what i usualy do as i want to be alone for the openning 3-400m and then, i get in the inside and join with others. i beleive the start of the race needs to be controle and relax, everyone swim fast at the begining… it s after 400m that the real swim race begin…
2800? holy, can you say draft fest on the bike?
