IM AZ: no shoes on pedals in T1

From the athlete guide (haven’t been to a meeting yet) it states only pros can have shoes on pedals in T1. I presume this is a safety issue due to bike mount in park on narrow path and number of competitors.

So for those who have done IM AZ before, is this enforced? I don’t recall doing a race I couldn’t have shoes on bike before, but if it is truly for safety, I would hope it is enforced.

It’s the same at IMFL. They said if they saw shoes on the bike, they’d remove them and put them in your T1 bag. So I assume it’s enforced, but honestly don’t know anybody who would test that out.

At IMFL, you can leave them clipped in at the end of the bike.

Why is this is a surprise?

Every full Ironman race I have done (since 2005) except for Kona requires you to put your shoes in the bag.

Exactly, same rule for every IM unless you are a pro.

It’s been a few years since doing an IM and Kona was the last I did where, yes, I had my shoes on bike. I don’t remember having to put shoes in bag in other IM’s before so I was surprised to see that, but maybe my memory fails me. Anyways, thanks all for the clarification.

I have worked bike check in the last three years, we are told to not say anything, they then take the shoes off and place them in transition bags when bike check in is over.

Which is funny, because by many reports I’ve read, unless your a fast swimmer (<58:00 NWS), it’s one of the most crowded T1 exists you’ll ever see.

I’ve only down 1, but you just put them in t\your T1 bag and carried them. NBD, everyone had to do it, but I personally find it almost harder hard to clip in to pedal after a flying mount than slide my feet into shoes held in place with rubber bands. Plus you need some to hold you bike at the mount line. But OTOH, I can imagine major carnage with those that are pretty fatigued from swimming 90+ minutes further back.
