IM Austria (1)

Hi everybody,

I’ve just subscribed to IM Austria and am now looking for more info on the race and it’s course.

I’ve seen and heard about the profile of the bike course and was wondering about the descent. Are there a lot of cornering? or is it pretty straight? I dont worry much about the climb, but am not really good on descent and especially on turning fast so do I have to spend time working on it? I mean I’ll spend time on it anyway because I need it but maybe more if I know that it’s a needed skill for IM Austria…

Any suggestion on where to stay? I’ve heard about the camping, but what about your bike? I sure wont leave mine in a tent!

I’ll travel around Austria for 2 weeks after the race, do you have any suggestion(trek?)? Rent a car or travel by train.

All imput is welcome.

Thank’s

Richard

The course is pretty wide open, the climb goes up the steep side, comes down gradually. I don’t remember any sharp corners, nothing remotely tricky, anyway.
If you can function on your bike on a day-to-day ride, you’ll be fine.

If you can’t go fast on this course, give it up.

Can’t help with lodging, sorry.
Good luck.

I did IM austria last year and had a great experience. The watter for the swim was wonderful but I think it was a little crowded for the number of people. Having looked at the swim course you have seen the canal you swim up to finish it was shoulder to shoulder to the finish impossible to pass anyone and I had to wait to get out of the water. MY swim was a 1:01. The bike was a great course as mentioned nothing difficult(technical). The only 2 climbs are within a mile of eachother I felt there were a lot of false flats so train very gradusl climbs. If your strong on the bike this would be a very fast course. Be prepared to except drafting because there were pacelines 3-15people and packs. There were very few penalities for drafting. I’m not complaining because most of the people were probably much better then myself but it was emphasized in the prerace meeting no drafting. The run is board flat. When you finish remember your getting european sizes I forgot and should have gotten exlarge. Over all I realy enjoyed the experience. after the race we took a train to Prague for a few days then back to Vienna for a few more which was a great experience. Unless you speak and/or read the language the train may be the best way to go. For us it made for a very memorable trip.

We stayed at a small hotel on the west shore of the event lake approx 6mi from race site in a beautiful setting. Our room over looked the lake. Race morning the hotel had arranged for a boat ride to race site. At the hotel they have a garage where everyone kept their bikes.

Best of Luck and have a great race mike peterson

The main descent is fairly straight, but there are some high-speed turns that do require your utmost attention. There is one in particular which is in a village which got the better of a couple of athletes. Nothing too terrible tricky like a series of switchbacks, but I would definitely recommend checking out the downhill section of the course beforehand on a bike. And if you can hammer the downhill (I’d recommend an -11 cog), you will love the course.
