for a long week-end, where would you go? My GF just finished a tough year at school and is straight into a summer student position working 10-12 hr days. She needs a break. I’ve got a wack of airmiles to use up, so we’re going somewhere in the US for a few days - just don’t know where. It’s been raining here for about six weeks, so sun & heat are a must. Don’t care about finding pools etc., this trip isn’t about me…
I’m always fond of the mountains to recharge my batteries…how about Park City, Utah? Lots to do, great trails to run or MTB, some cool bars and good restuarants. There’s some awesome B&Bs that have decent rates in the summertime.
If you have 5 days i would go to the island of kauai in Hawaii. It is the most low key and stress free place I have ever been. Me and my wife run off there when we want to forget about everything. It is always nice and hot this time of year and plenty of nice beaches.
go to new orleans or southern florida–like miami or south beach, or in the keys. go on a boat trip (or rent one yourself), or just hang on the beach, and she can be out in the sun in her bikini with a few cocktails. great dinner at night, possibly a hot club to go dancing, and viola, instant recovery.
now if she’s more of a mellow personality then how about the more northern part of florida on the gulf coast. beautiful beaches…south destin area.
San Antonio, Texas. The Riverwalk is very romantic with lots of great Mexican food, La Villita–lots of artsy/fartsy stuff, Alamo and the Mission Trail–lots of history, Market Square–cheap Mexican imports. And warm and sunny–count on it. Just don’t go down to Nuevo Laredo–lot’s of problems down there right now.
Flying from the center of Canada. Don’t think I want to go outside of NA, I’ve got to plan this over a three day week-end and I don’t want to spend too much time in the air…
I once took a helicopter up to the glaciers outside of geez, what was that place called- Whistler, and had a hike and apicnic up there with my G/F. It was very nice. After a few hours the helicopter came back and picked us up. Very cool. The Whislter/B.C. area is beautiful all year long. I did Eco-Challenge there in 1996 and saw some incredible terrain shown on the Discovery Channel.
Which airline are you using, since their hubs might make the choice easier?
You’re location and length of stay is binding. From the middle of Canada, and for only a weekend-if you’re going to fly, stick with a short non-stop, nor you’re cutting off a whole day of RT travel. What about Whistling Straights in WI, especially if you golf). Maine or Rhode Island, if not too far.
Hell, for 3 days, I’d find a great hotel within 2 hour drive, and book for 2 nights stay, getting there early and leaving late. Look for a Ritz and just relax.
Then again, if your GF is a student, then how’s your finances?
Air Canada - Chicago is the hub. Her finances are typical (I think) for most going thru a professional program… the bank owns 2/3 of a law degree right now.
However, my $$ are fine - I’m not too worried about the cost.
What about Vegas? She’s never been, 3 days is about all I need to spend there, and there a some kick ass hotel/pool/spa options…
Arizona for sure. A few days here at this time of the year and you will be looking forward to returning to normal temps.
Plus, there is a ton to see and do here all within about an hour and a half from Scottsdale which itself offers myriad attractions. And at this time of the year the resorts start dropping their prices to attract summer stays.
Some ideas if you do come here:
To stay: Camelbak Inn, Double Tree Resort, Point South Mountain, The Buttes
To shop (for your gf of course): Oldtown Scottsdale, Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall
To eat: So many places… Bandera, Eddie V’s, and Ruth’s Chris for upscale. Check out The Horny Toad, Rawhide (kind of touristy), Greasewood Flat and Pinnacle Patio for a SW flare to burgers and steaks
To visit: Carefree, AZ - all of it and it is about 30 to 45 minutes from dt Scottsdale. Sedona, AZ, about an hour and a half from Scottsdale but has truly awesome views of red rock formations. The Grand Canyon, though at this time of the year it tends to be a bit crowded and will be about a 4 hour drive.
