If you train on a heavy/non-aero bike

How do you then pace yourself on your light and aero race-day setup? Perceived exertion? HR?

The race day bike set up is just so much quicker, I’m finding the pacing a challenge. Maybe a power meter should be in my future, hmmm?

You should go about as hard as you can as you would on your heavy bike, just be a bit faster. The position would be the only thing that will ‘change’, so maybe it’s different muscles working.

I train and race on a non-aero bike. I do road triathlons on my road bike, and I do xterra’s on my 29lb heavy-ass mountain bike.

ZippityDuDah,

You are just fishing, right? Looking for a taker/sucker?

Work is work. A watt biking is the same as a watt running, etc. Same for perceived exertion. Same for heart rate. When you’re sweating bullets, you’re sweating bullets!

A comfortable ride on a heavy ass non aeo bike is the same workload as a comfortable ride (same perceived effort level) on your super light super aero DuDahZipp.

Its just some believe that riding a heavier less aero bike in training creates a greater training opportunity (more workload/effort) to keep up with the group than riding their super light super aero DuDahZipp bike. Then when they race on their super light super aero DuDahZipp bike they are more fit and can ride faster because they had to work harder to keep up and therefore they have trained harder.

While you train on your heavy/non-aero bike, I assume you ride your aero bike once in a while? so you should get a good idea.

& Unless it is an IM… It is an (almost) all out effort anyway!

Fred.
