If you thought Baseball writers were nuts (Belichick)

Multiple outlets reporting Bill Belichick fell short of the required votes to be a first ballot selection for the pro football hall of fame.

Whatever your opinion on him, not selecting him for the HoF in the first ballot is nuts and can really only be politics related to Spygate. 2nd in all time wins, 8 Super Bowl wins as a coach including the 6 as HC for New England.

Stolen from a buddy:

Well, it is likely he is using “Performance Enhancing Drugs”

Do you think this will apply to Brady as well with deflated ball gate? I’m thinking no because even if that was a consideration, Brady was always cordial to the media. Belichick, not so much.

Your buddy is right.

It’s one of those results that makes you question the legitimacy of the institution.

Is she 26 now?

Just consider it motivation for him to go to the Raiders, then when voted in, refuse to attend out of spite.

From The Athletic:

Belichick, 73, needed to receive at least 40 votes from a 50-person panel (80 percent) to gain enshrinement. As a coach, Belichick was grouped with one contributor finalist — who, this year, is Patriots owner Robert Kraft — and three senior finalists (players who have been eligible for more than 20 years): Ken Anderson, Roger Craig and L.C. Greenwood. Among that group of five, each of the 50 selectors was asked to vote for three. The highest vote-getter gains enshrinement, along with up to two others who receive at least 40 votes.

The Hall changed its selection process in August 2024 — going into effect with the Class of 2025 — adopting stricter rules for selection and also lowering the waiting period for coaches to become eligible from five years to one. That tweak allowed Belichick, who last coached in 2023, to be eligible sooner.

He had a fine career, but he’s no Don Coryell … or Marv Levy.

Yep, a lot of Super Bowl rings. Zero without Brady. 82-97 overall without Brady.
Brady goes to Tampa and gets another ring with Todd Bowles.
Belichik goes to NC and goes 4-8 against crap.
I hate Brady, but he was the reason.

Word is he refuses their insistence that he not cut the sleeves off the gold jacket.

Well, two without Brady as an assistant coach, but sure.

And he should also be an easy choice for a first ballot HoF.

They changed the requirements to get in for coaches, letting them get in with fewer years after retiring. Why would you do that, and then still make an obvious HoFer wait an extra year?

The writers were voting to keep Jordon away from the HoF.

Bruce Arians was the coach when Brady was in Tampa.

Was Brady a huge reason why NE was so successful? Absolutely. It’s also a team effort and a coaching effort. NE likely wouldn’t have been as successful in the hands of a different head coach. Belichick was able to move the chess pieces and squeeze the most potential out of his roster. Without Brady they never win a Super Bowl. Without Belickick they certainly don’t win six and don’t get there nine times.

Belichick deserves a lot of credit for NE’s success. To think otherwise is just foolish.

To not be a first ballot HoF coach is almost criminal.

Do you feel the same about Bonds in baseball? (i.e. should have been 1’st ballet)

Different argument entirely.

My first thought was it was Arians. Google led me astray.
I have no doubt that Belichik will get in. I’m mostly being a smart ass about it. But maybe you can admit he was only successful when Brady was around. What happened to squeezing the most out of his roster when Brady wasn’t running things? Where was his chess piece mastery in Cleveland? Why does no one in the NFL want him now? Controlling girlfriend or not, if someone in the NFL thought he could make them win, he would be hired. From what I have seen, he isn’t even on the long lists in a year with the a large number of openings

The Brady debate is largely beside the point. It is always hard to know how much of a team’s success to attribute to the coach. With 29 head coaches in the NFL HOF, the principle is established: if your teams win a lot, you’re in. We don’t try to figure out whether Tony Dungy was the reason the Colts were good, even though Manning won a SB after leaving the team.

Plus, it’s not like Brady was a great QB before Belichick. Winning after all those years of being coached by him could mean that Brady learned some lessons from his coach. Regardless, if you look at the other coaches in the HOF, it’s clear BB should be in on the merits.

Football writers are the majority of voters. What are the chances that his interactions with the press are partially to blame? Wouldn’t be the first time.
I heard a commentator say, “Relax people. He will get in next year.”
