If you hated political trolls before

…you probably still get annoyed by seeing them regularly on a triathlon BB. As Lance Armstrong described Marco Pantani, I’d decribe these provocateurs as a bunch of “little shit starters”.

Are you aware that there are well funded groups out there who want to take away your right to operate a bike on a public roadway? I dare say most Americans would vote in favor of that. Once your liberties are gone, it is too late to get them back. Politics affects every aspect of your life, including your sport and recreation. That is why political threads are relevant on a triathlon LIFESTYLE* forum.

*Per Slowman, the host

There’s a difference between a political troll and a political discussion. The former is designed solely to incite and I find them annoying. I have not suggested they should be banned, I merely find them annoying in this context.

And no, I am not ignorant of the presence of well-funded forces who’d ban our presence on public roads nor am I unaware of Dan’s policy of keeping this forum open to virtually all topics and participants, with rare exception ( eg Orang U Tan).

That would be a valid argument, if that was what was being discussed. But we all know thats not. Oh wait maybe it is. I stop reading those posts after about the first page. You know about the time people start insulting one another or one post grows to whole page long.

I asked a question about the “Swim workouts in a binder” and how many answers did I get? Zero. Why? Am I the only person doing Workouts in a binder? I did a search and a couple of people on here recommended this book.Maybe everybody to busy arguing politics to answer my post.I though the idea for this forum was to help one another to be better triathlete.

OK I’m done with my rant.

Dave

It’s -6 in Wisconsin today…not much in the mood for talking technical triathlon issues. And the ranting that does take place here is always amusing and can, at times, show the diversity of this group and our sport. I encourage the debates…but once the Tundra thaws - I’ll be skipping the political threads and go back to debating the most aero front wheel.

By the way - are you related to Judge Ito from the Simpson trial?

Something tells me it’s going to be a long year around here. If you think it’s bad now, just wait 'til the elections really get going.http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/aktion/action-smiley-051.gif http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/aktion/action-smiley-070.gif

Hopefully the start of tri season, the Olympics, and the Tour will get things back on track around here.

I did a search and a couple of people on here recommended this book.

I’ve been on message boards for quite a while. It is always best to do a search first, then ask a question. Why?

Because people generally ask the same or similar tpye questions every month. After a person has answered the same question twice, they are not likely to respond a third time?

Who’s to blame?

  1. The person who is asking a question that has already been asked, and more importantly … ANSWERED.

or

  1. Those who did not respond.

IMO, it’s #1.

It bothers me when posters complain when others don’t stop what they’re doing and answer the person’s question. I’ve asked questions that got a few views and no responses. I figured this was for 2 reasons, It’s already been answered countless times, or I asked a boring, uninteresting question.

Folks, I love triathlon training, but it is INCREDIBLY boring to talk about … I suppose that’s why most of the dicsussion are about bike parts or the latest technology. I enjoy swimming for an hour straight. I enjoy running for an hour straight. I enjoy biking for 2 hours straight. Anyone want to read about me running at a constant pace for minute after minute? Hell, I don’t even wanna read about my own training.

So … message boards generally gravitate toward off-topic discussions. It happens at every message board … except those that have moderators that strictly enforce on topic discussions. Ironically those message boards get about 5 new posts a day, and they’re likely questions about PC Coach, HRMs, Bike seats, Running shoes, or similar topics that have volumes of articles, books, responses, etc written about them already.

To reiterate, always do a search. There’s virtually no triathlon questions that hav eno been asked. Likewise rare is the topic that has not been discussed at length.

There is one thing that will always bring a smile to my face. One thing that always seems to make me laugh at human nature. It’s one thing that always make me realize how funny (funny in a ha ha way) people (all people) really are.

  1. People that complain about others that complain.

or, in this case.

  1. People that start shit about people that start shit.

or, in other words

  1. People that make a new thread complaining about others who start useless threads.

You see it all the time, and it’s likely that we’ve all done it … but, it always cracks me up. I don’t know if it’s because I love irony and sarcasm, or because I find arrogance funny, etc … but I always get a kick out of it.

“I hate when people …” … except when I do it … of course.

Am I related to Judge Ito? He’s my conjoined twin.

FWIW, people around here are usually good about answering a question, even if it has been asked in the past. There are a bunch of people that come to this forum just because they hear it is the place to find out about this bike, or that wheel, etc… Whether or not your question gets a response and how many often has to do with when you post it. Anything posted after, say, mid-day on a friday will usually get few response. Posts made in the evenings and on the weekends get fewer responses. Once a thread makes it off the 1st page it is usually done. If you really want to know if anyone out there has an answer to your question, make sure it is on the 1st page during the week, early in the day.

BTW, your question is not one of the ones that has been asked ad nauseum.

I did a search and a couple of people on here recommended this book.

I’ve been on message boards for quite a while. It is always best to do a search first, then ask a question.

Sorry for the confusion but I did the search first.

Stop what your doing? Did I really ask you to do that? As far as being “answered before”, like I said I did the search before I asked the question.

As far as a boring question maybe your right.

As far as you talking about your training and it being BORING yah your right. But do you have to tell me all about your training. Just a short answer would have been fine.

I use to hang out at a board for my Kawasaki ZX-12r but after awhile all they talked about was wood working.I havent been to it in over a year. You can post all the off topic you want, it’s a free country. But if people don’t get their answers, even if they are boring then their going else where. And if people start doing that then there are fewer eyes looking at this board and if that happens then you start to lose advertisers and we know what happens then. I’m not saying thats going to happen, its just a little food for thought.

Dave

Dave,

I shouldn’t have even written what I wrote. No matter how I tried to word it, it is going to sound bad (condescending) and not reflect what I was trying to say.

I sound like a dick in my post, and perhaps I was/am.

You do have a right to protest/question that a legit training question got zero responses while other off-topic threads are getting more than they should … on a board set up for triathlon questions.

My explanantions/comments were basically to say to you “don’t take it personally” (i.e. your thread got zero responses) and to try and explain why there were so many off-topic threads. Your experience at the other boards shows you already knew this.

I’m sure every poster here wants to see this board continue, and as you pointed out, it’s the responsibility of said members to answer questions as posted. Otherwise, it’s going to be the same 10 guys having the same 10 discussions day after day (as happens to many other boards).
