Yep, wife and I saw it live. Fuggin nasty!

She went into the fight with fairly inflamed califlower ear. What happens is the ear skin separates from the cartilage and a fluid filled bubble forms. This eventually gets hard and makes the classic califlower ear. This will happen over and over deforming the ear more and more over time.
This fighter went into the fight with not only hardened ear but also a big blood filled bubble as well.
Take a couple of blows or even just friction in the clinch and the shit gets real angry. Then the last straw is that punch and that’s that. Guys have had significant portions of the ear just come right off in cases like this. That’s why they stopped the fight. That ear was coming off.
I have a mild bit of califlower ear myself and when it’s in the fresh, fluid filled stage it’s very painful to the touch so I wear headgear in training when it’s inflamed like that. Once it hardens it’s not so bad and I get rid of the headgear (for various reasons I’m not going to get into here). Keep in mind I train grappling only (no striking).
This chick should have never gone into the fight in this condition. She should have spent her last six weeks training making sure her ear was “healed”. She may have been somewhat ok at the start of the fight and developed this ear issue during.
I’ve seen fights (Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson) where a guy has a huge ear problem from the get go and gets it just destroyed (YouTube that fight, you’ll see what I mean).
In amateur fights (here in CA) if you show up with puffy blood filled ears they won’t let you fight.
Anyway, my syntax here is horrible because my brain is on half speed so sorry about that.
Even Kimbo looked kind of disgusted when that burst open.
Ummm sexxy
.
Why don’t they drain it with a needle before the fight?
Why don’t they drain it with a needle before the fight?
It’s not that simple. Draining plus compression (and no trauma) for a week or so, plus 3-4 weeks of no trauma or headgear will “fix” it.
Drain it right before the fight and it’ll be filled back up by the second round.
The simple solution is training with head gear, but cauliflower ear is stupidly considered a badge of honor.

I’ve used headgear for bjj and it sucks. Cauliflower ear sucks and I don’t like the fact that I have it. But, when I wear headgear (wrestling style ear guards) my neck always gets fucked up. Headgear gets caught (especially in the gi) and makes escaping chokes more difficult.

As for the badge of honor, while this is true, some of it may be just a coping mechanism.
Training for fighting will give you cauliflower ear and make you ugly. So why not turn into something “cool”?

Can cauliflower ear ever go back to human ear? Or is the change permanent?
P.S. Will you post a pic of your cauliflower ear?
Holy OUCH!
It is my understanding that you can drain the blood from the cartilage, but the scarring and damage is pretty much there.

Yes, it’s permanent. Mine was huge. I drained it, stuffed cotton and gauze in the ear folds and wore a tight bandana around my head for 10 days and made it a lot better. A couple of months ago it got puffed up again and I did the same procedure (I drain it at home). Just took this photo…

Here’s the other ear (that actually has slight damage as well…

The scab/cut on the bottom lobes just keep getting reopened every time I roll. It’s from the lobe being folded and smashed. It’s annoying as hell.

That does not look bad at all. Seems pretty minimal cauliflower ear from some you see on TV but I can see where the cut could be annoying as it opens up.
Like I said, mine’s is pretty minimal. I take another photo in the morning and you’ll see that it’s a bit more noticeable right when I wake up.
Some of the guys I train with look like they have golf ball implants.
Some people don’t care or don’t know how to take care of it when it gets bad. I’m sure there are some idiots that actually cultivate it.
Others I train with have been training bjj for a decade or more and have no issues at all. Partly grappling style and partly genetic.
I noticed in the video that Kimbo didn’t seem to have it at all.

He went into MMA with zero grappling experience. Cauliflower comes from grappling.

Once it looks like a golf ball can it impair hearing? Or is it just cosmetic?
