If you believe the economy expanded 3.9% in Q3, then __________ (complete sentence)

I have a bridge to sell you!

3.9%? Hell, why not just lie (like they always do) and round up to 5%? Why don’t we start talking real numbers, like the “real” unemployment rate (Bush administration changed these numbers too for benefit) or that 90 million people are not working and being paid to not work?

Not for a minute do I believe any numbers that come out of this administration, especially economic numbers.

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time you trusted an administration with their statistics?

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time you trusted an administration with their statistics?

Hoover!

Stop blaming the victim. When was the last time an administration was trustworthy with their statistics?

It doesn’t even usually take much more than scrolling down to the second or third google result to find out that they’re lying.

I think we’re trying to say the same thing here.

Politicians, hell, anyone selling themselves in one way or another will skew statistics (ie outright lie) to make themselves look good. I’m not sure why this seems to be news to some people.

My mistake, I misread your post.

You believe we walked on the moon, and just landed a satellite on a comet.

Then you probably know what it means.

Imagine what number POTUS could show if he could include transfer payments into GDP - but then again when I think about it, those transfer payments end up in someones pocket who then uses the money to consume product that is counted, so I guess I need to correct myself…The real deal is even if it 3.9% it really doesn’t mean anything, unless it stays that way for 8-10 consecutive quarters.

The world is in such a debt super cycle…will it ever really burst?

If it does, I promise you, it will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Watch FRED M2 Velocity and FRED Total Consumer Credit

Side note: if wealth distribution were addressed AND/OR the nature of our monetary system were changed (not gold) we could increase velocity and hold nominal GDP steady or even grow it while reducing outstanding debt.

I will watch later but I peeked at the graphs…interesting at the consumer level we started to pay down debt at the onset of the recession while the govt was doubling down. Of course, now we are borrowing at the same trajectory.

Isn’t amazing that despite all this new debt we can’t grow. Surely we are close to the end of this cycle.

Oh my god, the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!! No matter what number someone would put out, there would be critics that it did not include this or that. They are just used for comparison sake, that is all. You Obama haters like to think that he is cooking the books, but in reality, lots of folks have been getting left off the work rolls for a very long time. Everyone knows this, but doesn’t mean you cannot compare the numbers that come out of the formula.

And what happened to the end of the world when the FED stopped buying up its bonds? Funny how interest rates for the 10 year have actually gone down since they stopped buying, which is the exact opposite of the cries of the sky is falling crowd. Debt is coming down at a huge rate, and what debt we do incur is at virtually no interest.

When the sky has not caved in on you, look around and see that people are buying more stuff, more people are going to work, and companies are making more money than they have in a long time. We have the most solid economy in the world, and they seem to think we are a very good long term place to put their money( thus the bond yeilds still being driven down)

But keep up the cry, like that proverbial broken clock, sooner or later you will be right. A lot of fund managers though like you for the past few years, and guess what, they are tripping over themselves to get their money in the market, just to get at least an ounce of gain before the end of the year. Gonna be a very merry Xmas for the market and all the companies it comprises…

What debt is coming down?

Is it govt debt? No
Is it student loan debt? No
Is it personal debt? No

Look at the charts.

The reason why money is pouring into stocks is you can’t get yield anywhere. So supply and demand rule - lots of demand for stocks so it goes up, its not rocket science. This cannot go on forever…can it?

And what happens to all the bonds ($4 TRILLION) do they just sit on the Feds balance sheet forever?

Didn’t someone say something about correctly predicting nine of the last six recessions?

I can’t help but notice that while you were complaining about people not talking about “real” numbers, you didn’t actually use any yourself. You are welcome to produce the “real” numbers whenever you please. I suspect you’ll just keep complaining about the “fake” numbers instead.

And what happens to all the bonds ($4 TRILLION) do they just sit on the Feds balance sheet forever?

Why not? It’s not a real bank.

Allowing the assets to run off will be the new tightening. Asset purchases are the new easing. That’s how you conduct monetary policy at the ZIRB. Big Ben basically said as much in many academic papers.

It is a real conundrum in my state.

Republicans are outraged at the slow national level recovery and that unemployment statistics don’t include people who have just quit looking and so the “real” unemployment rate is significantly higher. Democrats crow about how great the jobs and unemployment look compared to 6 years ago.

Meanwhile, in the state, since Republicans are in charge, look at how great we are, with our unemployment rate falling. And the Democrats proclaim about the uncounted unemployed in the state.

Do these people know they are talking out of both sides of their mouth (or asses) or do they actually convince themselves of these things?

Please tell me more about the “real” unemployment rate. Or just tell me how you think the unemployment rate is calculated and how you’d calculate this “real” unemployment rate.
