You’ll have to excuse the fact that I haven’t read the link, but the quote from the article says, basically, nothing. “Either we bomb Iran, or we use diplomacy, or we they get the bomb.”

The French and other Europeans are actually right in that problems like Saddam Hussein and Iran can be solved diplomatically and economically rather than militarily. The problem is that they never step up to do it, going for a quick buck from tyrants rather than living up to their international obligations. Had the French, Germans and Russians not supported Hussein, we would have never needed to invade.
Maybe Sarkozy is signalling the willingness to actually use that soft power like an adult.

I believe that during the Iran/Iraq war, we were a major funder of Hussein and his government. Had we not invaded his country, then he would be the one holding the Iranians in check right now, for it was him that they feared most. We bungled the whole thing sooo bad, that they hve absolutly no fear of us anymore, and they are playing us like a piano right now. Sad part is, that many know it, but we are is so deep, that we can do almost nothing to stop Iran now, and they are laughing at our predicament. They are waiting for their oppertunity to pounce. And if not, they can just wait in the wings funding what ever group that wants to kill us, until we go broke funding this mess, falling apart internally like the old SOviet Union, all the time developing their nuclear arsenal without any worries, who is going to stop them now, the boy scouts??? Yes, I can see how this unbelievable capability to destroy our enemies with one submarie has intimiated the Iraqi insurgents. Every time they kill one of our guys with a $3 IED they think to themselves - “shit, with one pinky of their American hands, they could destroy my entire country”.
You should think about the creeping incrementalism of weapons trafficking. That $3 IED came from somewhere…not as a complete device, but as ‘parts’ along with other weapons, ammo, explosives made for the sole pupose of killing American soldiers. Let’s say it came from Iran. If my policiies are followed and Iran can no longer produce these weapons, insurgents have nothing. It’s pretty basic: One Submarine…push a button = Problem Solved
