I have been battling PTT for a while and have given up on most sports and exercise. I never wanted to use my orthotics for running because I did not want to get dependent on them. I am finally showing relief from the PTT and want to get back to running. I have been wearing my orthotics now in all my shoes (currently walking). Prior to the PTT I ran in either Asics keyano or the 2000 series. During the PTT I have switched from a stability shoe to a motion control shoe.
My question is: If I use my orthotics does it make a difference if I use a neutral, stability, or motion control shoe? Reading some reviews I know one person mentioned he thought the combination of orthotics and motion control shoe actually hurt him a little as it was too much control. I was going to email rroof but if I have to pay a co-pay per email I think I owe him over a grand so any advice is appreciated.
Before I had orthotics, I was always in motion control shoes due to severe pronation. I now use custom orthotics made by my podiatrist, who is also a runner. He put me in neutral shoes saying that the combination of orthotics + a motion control shoe could (at least in my case) have effects as severe as a stress fracture.
The other poster was right on … it depends on how severe your PTTD is/was, your bony structure/biomechanics, etc.
In general, if a person needs to wear an orthotic, I prefer them in a more neutral shoe. I rarely have someone in a motion control shoe and orthotic (that is usually a 300 lb + non athlete). You would probably be perfectly safe in a structure type shoe (like an Asics GT2140 etc. that you mentioned) for now - maybe trying a neutral shoe later.
