If I have to move to L.A. where is the best place to live for training?

Good lord I hope I dont have to, but it may be in the cards for me. I REALLY dont like LA, but if I have to go, where should I live?

Please help me!!!

Near me.

OK really though, what type of athlete are you? I first knew you, well internet knew you, on letsrun, so I’m assuming you run quite a bit. How much do you ride? Do you swim as well?

Valencia/Santa Clarita
.

Not sure if that commute will work but I do like that area.

I’ll probably have to be in the downtownish area or close enough to it for a regular commute but I’ll find out more tonight.

Dear God, please don’t make me move back to SoCal, and can I get some pectoral muscles?

If I had my choice, and had to live in Los Angeles County, it’d probably be right where fellow poster Mike Donia lives (I think). I believe he’s right off of highway 39, basically at the mouth of the canyon leading back into the San Gabriel Mountains, best place I know of to train. PM him if he doesn’t chime in.

I have lived in many places in the LA area since going to UCLA and now being a graduate and still living in the area. For rides on PCH, up in the Santa Monica Mtns, and up along Mull. blvd Santa Monica i.e. the westside are great places to live. Always people working out and people to ride with.

I recently moved north to Santa Clarita/Stevenson Ranch area and agree with the follow poster that this area is great. You can do extra long rides on the 126 with a crazy head wind on the way home guaranteed. The new 9 million dollar swim facility is great. $3/session and even a masters coach if you so choose. Not to mention the running trails and more. A commute but well worth if you want to be away from the valley and city people.

Rump-a-bump-bump for you Monday morning, I’m hung over after the Steelers game, dear God does the intensity of these neon lights rival the sun, two days off and I didn’t have sex once, give me back my weekend folks.

Any other thoughts?

I know, I know, I just moved form San Diego to Boston to Boulder… I know, I know, I hate SoCal, but hey, the porn industy calls…who can turn down that kind of dough? Huh? You tell me you would say no and I’ll never post again!

Places to train in the LA area in 3…2…1…

GO!

Ha ha ha ha !!! What the hell was that???

What’s a bump without a few fun lines.

“bump” is just too boring. At least toss in a spinning back flip or something.

Stay out of the Valley.

ha ha, yeah the porn industry, i bet you’ll be a natural. I can already guess what your signature “move” would be… la woof woof

Get on the Crucible fitness board and ask. They are LA Based.

it totally depends on what kind of commute you want. Tell us where you work, and your ideal / max commute time. Or, if you don’t work, and are just going to train - that is a different (and great) life.

I’m a life long LA guy so I should be able to comment. It sounds like you are working downtown… as such, no commute is going to be easy. I would suggest the Pasadena or Glendale areas. Your morning drive will be under 30 minutes and you are right at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. That means you can go from 500ft at your doorstep to 5500ft at the top of Mt Wilson in about 30 miles. Pasadena has the rose bowl aquatic center with two 100m pools and there are Tue & Thurs fast training rides on the 3 mile circuit around the Rose Bowl.

The big question is do you want to rent or buy. Two bedroom “starter” homes start around $600,000 in decent the neighbor hoods and you can easily spend $2.5 million. I couldn’t tell you about the rental market.

PM me if you have any questions.

I’ve lived on the westside or in Santa Monica for a long time. The Brentwood/ SM areas are good for running and swimming with lots of clubs/runners and SCAQ pools (and of course the Pacific!). The road biking unfortunately is pretty limited but you have easy access to the Santa Monica mountains if you like to mtb. The air quality is much better on the westside than the Glendale area and the Santa Clarita area is just plain ugly, apart from certain parts of Valencia.

Quite true, but in 20’ I can be above the inversion layer

Easy…SAN DIEGO!!

It depends on your tolerance for hot weather, too. There can easily be a 20 degree difference in temperature some days between the Pasadena area and the Santa Monica area. 30 degrees versus the Valley. It’s true you can escape some of the heat by climbing into the San Gabriels, but it’s still cooler on the coast most days.

I agree with an earlier poster that there are more good riding options near Pasadena than on the west side, but there are at least a few good ones on the west side (PCH to the various Malibu canyons, PV peninsula (getting there involves riding with some traffic, Topanga cyn, some good climbs in Brentwood (Mt. St. Marys, Mandeville) and Pacific Palisades (to the Palisades highlands).

There is some nice running along San Vicente in Brentwood and Palisades park in SM, as well as the beach and all of the trails in the SM mtns.

The Santa Monica College pool is highly recommended (http://santa-monica.org/aquatics/index.htm).

Thanks for the info.

I spent a few weeks in Pasadina and I thnk a exausted the road rides in just a few days time. I put in an epic 6 hour, I’m so fucking lost ride and ended up at helens bike shop. The dudes there were telling em where all the good rides are and I think I did them all inthat one ride. Rose Aquatic center was fun.

I may not have to work when I get there. I may just be training full time. We’ll se just how fast I get and how well some business plans work out.

If I didn’t have to work, where would the best training be? I guess I could drive to some of the better rides, runs and what not if I was training full time.

If you don’t have to work, then you should move somewhere else. You can find good rides, runs and pools in LA, but it is hardly Mecca. San Diego seems to be a popular choice for full-time training. OC has some good riding, as well. I’d probably check out Santa Barbara, as well.
