Ie7 won't start

I’m trying to help a guy who has gotten himself into a little computer problem. He is using Windows XP and up until a month ago IE7. Now he can’t get his browser to load up. He is connected to the internet though.

It is possible that he has a virus or a trojan as he has been engaging in risky internet behavior (with an unupdated and expired Norton virus scan program).

He is in the process of trying to back up all of his files so that he can reboot the computer to factory settings.

Things that have been tried:
uninstalling IE7 and reinstalling turned off the add-ons trying s reboot to the last known date that it worked
Is there anything simple that can be done to try and mitigate this problem?

Thanks for any help.

not to be a smartass or anything…

firefox?

I suggested it, but he isn’t open to it…yet. The problem is that he can’t get anything on the web because he has no browser capability, so we can’t even get to a place where he can download. I don’t think he wants to buy a new program. Thanks though.

I’d just reinstall it… Takes 10 minutes.

If he doesn’t have virus protection then who knows why though. Not even the holy firefox browser will save your machine if you choose to leave the front door open.

you would reinstall ie7? THat is where I am going I think. I have properly castigated him for “leaving the door open.” He is unable to find his OEM discs…(sigh).

I was able to get it to work in SAFE MODE, so that is something.

Thanks,
Bernie

A re-install will default to trouble shooting wizard if it finds parts are already on the machine…
