Ideas for promoting a triathlon-themed book

Hi everyone. After cutting back on posting on Slowtwitch, my bored fingers found themselves writing a book. Somehow, I got a publisher interested and- long story short- the book will be released in late August.

Very briefly, the book began as a challenge to lose weight: I read that only 5% of diets resulted in meaningful sustained weight loss. Thinking this was ridiculously low, I sought out to try to find a better way, eventually adopting a diet where I ate only every other day. As I lost weight, I became fascinated with the value of human intelligence and willpower in propelling you to achieve physical goals. I begin to test myself, first in running, then in triathlons, as I chronicle how I turned myself from a 350-pound couch potato into a competitor at the national tri champs. The book is- in my opinion- aimed at telling a story, being helpful/inspirational to those who struggle with their weight, and being funny (I have a solid repertoire of new-triathlete stories:).

I’m not trying to use this forum to promote myself, so I won’t mention the title. However, this is my first book. I enjoyed doing it, and would like to be successful enough at it that I can leave my “day job.” Thus, I want to promote it as best I can. Since there seem to be very few non-training triathlon books, I thought the forum might be interested in helping me. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might go about doing this?

Thanks!

you would go a whole day without eating?

Sorry, I have no idea how to go about being an author…but congrats on the book deal. Who hasn’t thought about writing a book at one time or another? On the other hand, very few of us do.

Send a PM to this guy: Todd Crandall - Racing for Recovery
(Sorry, I just did a search for a recent thread he created but couldn’t find it. It was only a few weeks ago that he posted it).
Anyway, he wrote a book (which I read) about overcoming addiction through Triathlon.

Possibly you guys could cross-promote your books. Not sure what the numbers were on his publishing run.
He would at least be a good contact as he has actually published a book about Triathlon and as you stated it wasn’t about the training aspect.

Best of luck.
Ryan

I’d go 24 hours without eating or drinking anything but water, every other day for six months. It’s ugly, but effective.

Thanks for the idea. I’ll try and look him up!
