Anyone know the area?
There is an opportunity for me to go on a year and half road job and it seems cool, mountains, open road to ride on, Grand Teton Natl Park and Yellowstone nearby.
Beautiful country, I live in Florida but I have friends that stay in Driggs in the summer. I go out and visit every year, cost of living is much less than over the pass in Jackson, Wy. Summer days are not wasted, it seems everyone is outside doing some activity.I don’t know about the tri scene but I think Barb Lundquist lives in Victor, where the hills and thin air have helped her!
Spent 25 years (grew up) there. Cost of living will be much, much cheaper than CT. If you snow ski, you have grand Targhee, Sun Valley, and Jackson Hole nearby. Fishing, hiking, water sports, out your back door (Snake River, Blacktail reservoir). Pretty much all the outdoor sports/activities are available and nearby. You will likely have to travel to Boise or SLC for tri’s, but there are running and cycling events in the area. Winters are pretty cold/windy. It is not the big city by any stretch, but there are definitely a lot worse places to be.
Not a bad gig for a year and a half. Traffic gets pretty bad close to Jellystone and the Jackson Hole in the summer. The pass up by Red Lodge ,MT is one of the coolest roads in the world. They used to have a Round Wyoming tour in the summer, not too sure it is still going on. West Yellowstone, The Montana Hi-Line and International Falls , MN are some of the cooooooldest places in North American in the winter. My dad’s family is from Arco, ID. Not a lot going on there, but Idaho Falls is a pretty nice little town.
Wow, it sounds pretty cool, i love to snowboard, and hike and rock climb, so i figure its gotta be better than CT, what are the different seasons like? I know cold in the winter, is the summer mild and dry? or humid and hot? Is there a spring and fall?
I’m relatively close in Lander, Wyoming… Have been here about 10 months and it’s great.
Summers can be hot, but no/low humidity makes it very nice. Spring and fall are great. Winter’s not bad when there’s skiing to be done. Climbing is good (City of Rocks is probably close).
You’ll probably have a very strong Mormon vibe there. For some people that’s a problem but for most it isn’t after getting used to it.
Cost of living is better than big cities, but usually the salary numbers aren’t very high so it balances out…
Good luck. I know I’d move there in a heartbeat if I were you. But I’m not a big fan of cities or the east coast…
PM with questions if you’d like.

You could also sign up and do IMCDA next year, you would be relatively close!
Not sure how soon you will be in Idaho Falls, but on September 10 is the Lotoja Classic. The nations longest one-day USCF sanctioned event. A one-day race from Logan, UT to Jackson, WY scheduled to cover 206 miles this year. The race has all Cat levels (1-5) as well as citizen categories. Check it out at www.lotojaclassic.com, race it limited to 1,000 participants.
If you like to fly fish, the famous Henry’s Fork is near by and the Sawtooth Range is well worth exploring.
If you enjoy a nightlife and a great restaurant selection however, this may not be the best place for you.
There are four seasons, and they can run into each other. It has snowed in late May, and been warm in Sept. (they had a couple inches of hail last night). Generally, Spring in April and May, Fall in Sept and Oct. It’s technically a high mtn. desert (about 4500 ft. elev.), so there is very little humidity and rainfall is like 12 inches annually or someting like that. Summer temps (highs) can average high 60’s to the 90’s, but generally right around 80. lows are 40’s-50’s at night.
I live down in Logan, UT - start for the LoToJa event. The natural environment and cycling community here are probably the best thing about this area. As the previous post said, don’t move out here for the restaurants or nightlife! I have had enough after 3 years and am moving (again) to Italy… I hear they like cycling there too…
There are an increasing number of Tris in UT and ID. See Triutah.com for the UT events. We will have two or three tri’s in Cache Valley this summer and the UT state RR champs. The Masters, elite and junior RR,TT and crits are also in Park City again this summer… Its a pretty good region for sport if you don’t mind road tripping a little.
